Deborah Leah Birx (lahir di Pennsylvania, 1956) adalah seorang dokter dan diplomat asal Amerika Serikat yang berspesialisasi di bidang penanganan HIV/AIDS, imunologi, penelitian vaksin, dan kesehatan global. Ia kini menjabat sebagai Koordinator Respon Koronavirus dalam Satuan Tugas Koronavirus Gedung Putih terkait penanganan pandemi koronavirus di Amerika Serikat. Sebelumnya pada tahun 2014 hingga 2020, Birx menjabat sebagai Duta Besar Umum Amerika Serikat serta sebagai Koordinator AIDS Global Amerika Serikat yang bertanggung jawab atas program bantuan President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) dalam penanganan HIV/AIDS di 65 negara.
Kehidupan awal
Birx lahir di Pennsylvania pada tahun 1956 dari pasangan Donald Birx, seorang matematikawan dan insinyur elektro, dan Adele Sparks Birx, seorang perawat. Birx beserta keluarganya tinggal di County Lancaster, Pennsylvania selama beberapa tahun. Birx pernah mengikuti pameran sains County Lancaster pada tahun 1971 dan 1972 saat ia masih bersekolah di SMAN Laampeter-Strasburg di Lampeter. Keluarganya kemudian pindah ke Carlisle dan ia pindah dan lulus dari SMAN Carlisle. Birx kemudian berkuliah di Houghton College dan lulus dengan gelar sarjana sains pada tahun 1976 di bidang kimia. Ia kemudian melanjutkan pendidikannya ke Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University dan lulus sebagai dokter pada tahun 1980.
Karier
Birx merupakan perwira cadangan aktif di Angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1980 hingga 1994. Pada tahun 1994 hingga 2008, ia menjadi perwira reguler aktif dan dibebastugaskan dengan pangkat terakhir kolonel. Birx bekerja sebagai dokter pada tahun 1980 hingga 1989 di Rumah Sakit Angkatan Darat Walter Reed. Ia menjalani magang selama satu tahun dan menjadi dokter residen selama dua tahun dengan spesialisasi penyakit dalam. Pada tahun 1983 hingga 1986, pelatihan imunologi klinis di laboratorium Anthony Fauci. Ia kemudian memfokuskan kariernya pada penelitian vaksin HIV/AIDS hingga tahun 1989 ketika ia kembali bekerja di RS Walter Reed di bagian penelitian retrovirus.
Birx kemudian menjadi Direktur Program Penelitian HIV Militer Amerika Serikat di Institut Penelitian Angkatan Darat Walter Reed pada tahun 1996 hingga 2005. Sebagai direktur, Birx memipin percobaan klinis dari RV 144 yang diusulkan sebagai vaksin yang dapat mengurangi risiko penularan HIV. Pada tahun 2005 hingga 2014, ia menjadi Direktur Divisi HIV/AIDS Global Pusat Pengendalian dan Pencegahan Penyakit Amerika Serikat. Presiden Barack Obama pada bulan Januari 2014 mencalonkan Birx sebagai Duta Besar Umum dan Koordinator AIDS Global Amerika Serikat di bawah program President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Pada 27 Februari 2020, Wakil Presiden Mike Pence mennunjuk Birx sebagai Koordinator Respon Koronavirus Gedung Putih dalam Satuan Tugas Koronavirus Gedung Putih.
Kehidupan pribadi
Birx memiliki dua anak perempuan, Danielle dan Devynn. Ia dan suaminya tinggal serumah dengan orang tuanya, salah satu anaknya beserta menantu dan cucunya. Birx memperoleh penghargaan Legion of Merit dari Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1991.
