Dewi adalah sosok perempuan yang memiliki kekuatan adikodrati atau bersifat ilahiah. Secara etimologi, istilah dewi adalah bentuk feminin dari kata dewa. Sebagaimana dewa, dewi sering kali dikaitkan dengan berbagai jenis fenomena, seperti perang, kehancuran, atau juga penciptaan, pemberi kehidupan, penyembuhan, pemulihan, cinta, dan sifat welas asih.
Awalnya sosok dewi dikaitkan dengan mitos dan ritus mengenai kesuburan, antara lain misalnya sosok Dewi Ibu, Gaia, Isis dan Pertiwi, kemudian ada juga yang mengaitkannya dengan cinta seperti dewi Ishtar dan Afrodit (Venus), bahkan dengan kebijaksanaan dan perang seperti Athena (Minerva) dan Durga. Dewi kerap kali menjadi fokus pemujaan. Wujud dan ekspresi artistik mengenai sosok dewi dapat ditemukan dalam banyak kebudayaan.
Dalam beberapa agama, sosok perempuan suci menempati posisi istimewa dalam pemujaan dan doa. Sakti dalam agama Hindu adalah pemujaan dewi yang melambangkan kekuatan yang menggerakan dunia. Dalam agama Buddha terutama aliran Tibet (Vajrayana), salah satu pencapaian spiritual tertinggi adalah menjadi sosok Bodhisatwadewi Tara yang digambarkan sebagai pelindung yang tak kenal takut dan dipenuhi rasa welas asih bagi semua makhluk. Juga dalam Agama Buddha terutama aliran Mahayana, Dewi Kwan Im merupakan manifestasi dari Bodhisatwa Avalokitesvara juga disimbolkan sebagai dewi welas asih bagi semua makhluk.
