    Sungai Ebro (Spanyol: Ebro Catalan: Ebre) adalah sungai terbesar di Spanyol. Sungai Ebro dimulai dari Fontibre (prois Spain's most voluminous river. It starts at Fontibre, Cantabria dan melewati Miranda de Ebro, Logroño, Zaragoza, Flix, Tortosa, dan Amposta sebelum bermuara di Laut Mediterania di provinsi Tarragona.


    Nama


    Bangsa Romawi Kuno menamakan sungai ini Sungai Iber (Iberus Flumen), yang merupakan asal usul nama sungai ini sekarang. Nama ini berasal dari bahasa Latin yang mungkin diturunkan dari nama Bangsa Iberia, yaitu nama bangsa pra-Romawi yang tinggal di pantai Mediterania di Semenanjung Iberia. Selain itu, nama ini juga diklaim berasal dari kata bahasa Basque ibar, yang berarti "lembah."


    Sejarah


    Di zaman klasik, Sungai Ebro pernah digunakan sebagai batas wilayah perluasan Republik Romawi (utara) dan Kartago (selatan) setelah Perang Punic Pertama. Saat Romawi menjadikan kota Saguntum di sebelah selatan Ebro sebagai protektorat Romawi karena khawatir akan pengaruh pemimpin Kartago Hannibal yang terus meningkat di Semenanjung Iberia, Hannibal kemudian menganggap tindakan ini sebagai tindakan agresif, dan merupakan pemicu terjadinya Perang Punic Kedua.
    Sungai Ebro juga dijadikan tempat dimulainya serangan Republik Spanyol Kedua yang terkenal (1938) dalam Perang Saudara Spanyol. Serangan ini dikenal dengan nama Pertempuran Ebro, di mana walaupun diawali dengan kesuksesan, kaum Republik akhirnya dikalahkan dan gagal mencapai targetnya, Gandesa.
