    Kehidupan awal dan pendidikan


    Zwick lahir dalam sebuah keluarga Yahudi di Chicago, Illinois, sebagai putra dari Ruth Ellen (née Reich) dan Allen Zwick. Ia masuk New Trier High School, meraih gelar B.A. dari Harvard pada 1974, dan masuk AFI Conservatory, lulus dengan gelar Master of Fine Arts pada 1975.

    Film-filmnya meliputi Glory (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), The Siege (1998), The Last Samurai (2003), Blood Diamond (2006), dan Defiance (2008). Bersama dengan Marshall Herskovitz, Zwick menjalankan sebuah perusahaan produksi film yang disebut The Bedford Falls Company (terinspirasi oleh nama kota yang tampil dalam It's A Wonderful Life karya Frank Capra). Perusahaan tersebut telah memproduksi film-film terkenal seperti Traffic dan Shakespeare in Love dan acara TV thirtysomething, Relativity, Once and Again, dan My So-Called Life.
    Ia adalah salah satu penerima Academy Award untuk Film Terbaik untuk Shakespeare in Love; ia juga dinominasikan dalam kategori yang sama untuk Traffic.
