Ellesse adalah sebuah produsen pakaian olahraga yang didirikan di Umbria, Italia pada tanggal 19 Juni 1959. Perusahaan ini dimiliki oleh Pentland Group asal Britania Raya sejak tahun 1987.
Sejarah
Ellesse didirikan oleh Leonardo "Mantis" Servadio di Perugia, Umbria, Italia pada tahun 1959. Nama Ellesse berasal dari inisial nama Servadio, yakni "L.S."
Ellesse makin populer selama dekade 1970-an sebagai produsen pakaian ski seperti jaket berlapis dan celana ski. Pada tahun 1979, Jet Pant buatan Ellesse, sebuah celana ski yang dilengkapi dengan bantalan lutut dan bagian bawah yang lebar, agar dapat pas di sekeliling sepatu ski, dimasukkan pada sebuah gelaran di Pompidou Centre di Paris untuk merayakan desain asal Italia.
Cabang olahraga lain yang juga cukup dekat dengan Ellesse adalah tenis. Logo Ellesse terinspirasi dari bentuk bola tenis dan bentuk ujung sepasang ski.
Selama dekade 1970-an dan 1980-an, Ellesse makin populer karena menggabungkan fungsionalitas pakaian olahraga dengan gaya mode jalanan. Ellesse merupakan salah satu merek olahraga pertama yang menampilkan logonya di bagian luar pakaian buatannya. Selama pertengahan dekade 1980-an, perancang asal Prancis, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac bekerja sama dengan Ellesse, sebuah kolaborasi awal antara produsen pakaian olahraga dengan perancang mode.
Selebritas
Sejumlah selebritas olahraga telah mempromosikan Ellesse, antara lain pemain tenis Tommy Haas, Chris Evert, Guillermo Vilas, Boris Becker, Mats Wilander, Pat Cash, Arantxa Sánchez, dan Anna Kournikova, pemain ski Marc Girardelli dan Jean-Luc Crétier, serta pebalap Formula Satu, Alain Prost.
Selebritas lain yang juga terasosiasi dengan merek ini meliputi petinju Muhammad Ali, Liam Smith, Natas Kaupas dan Maurice Cheeks, serta aktor Brigitte Nielsen dan Roger Moore.
Ellesse juga mensponsori klub sepak bola, dan memproduksi pakaian untuk klub New York Cosmos pada dekade 1980-an.
Dibeli oleh Pentland Group
Pada tahun 1994, Pentland Group asal Britania Raya membeli 90% saham Ellesse dengan harga £20 juta. Pentland telah menjadi distributor Ellesse di Britania Raya sejak tahun 1981. Servadio tetap memegang 10% saham Ellesse.
Pentland Group juga memiliki merek pakaian olahraga lain seperti Berghaus dan Speedo. Pentland saat ini melisensikan merek Ellesse ke sejumlah mitra di seluruh dunia, agar mitra tersebut dapat memproduksi dan mendistribusikan produk Ellesse di wilayahnya masing-masing.
Ellesse merayakan hari jadinya yang ke-50 pada tahun 2009 dengan sebuah pesta di Roma pada bulan Juli 2009.
