    Erebidae adalah famili ngengat di superfamili Noctuoidea. Famili ini merupakan salah satu famili ngengat terbesar berdasarkan jumlah spesies dan berisi berbagai macam kelompok macrolepidoptera yang terkenal. Famili tersebut termasuk Catocala; ngengat sampah (Herminiinae); ngengat macan, lumut kerak, dan tawon (Arctiinae); ngengat tussock (Lymantriinae), ngengat beruang berbulu Arktik (Gynaephora groenlandica); ngengat penusuk buah (Calpinae dan lain-lain); ngengat mikronoctuoid (Micronoctuini); ngengat moncong (Hypeninae); dan zale, meskipun banyak dari nama umum ini juga dapat merujuk pada ngengat di luar Erebidae (misalnya, ngengat moncong crambid). Beberapa ngengat erebid disebut owlet.


    Deskripsi


    Ngengat dewasa Erebidae memiliki sayap depan segi empat dan biasanya sayap belakang segi empat, artinya setiap sayap memiliki urat kubital yang terbagi menjadi empat. Subfamili Micronoctuini malah memiliki sayap belakang bifine (artinya urat yang sama ini terbagi menjadi dua). Selain itu, Erebidae dewasa biasanya memiliki clypeofron yang tidak bersisik dan sayap depan yang lebar, serta sayap belakang sering kali memiliki pola. Scoliopteryginae, Calpinae dan beberapa Erebinae telah memodifikasi belalainya untuk menembus kulit buah. Lymantriinae dan beberapa Arctiina (Arctiinae) malah mempunyai belalai yang sangat kecil. Penampilan keseluruhannya mungkin berwarna-warni (misalnya Arctiinae, Aganainae) atau samar (misalnya Herminiinae).
    Larva biasanya berpenampilan halus, tetapi larva Arctiinae (beruang berbulu) dan Lymantriinae berbulu. Larva Arctiinae dan Lymantriinae telah mengembangkan proleg sepenuhnya, Aganainae dan Herminiinae telah mengembangkan proleg sepenuhnya atau sedikit berkurang, dan proleg di beberapa subfamili lain berkurang atau tidak ada sebagai adaptasi terhadap kehidupan arboreal (semi-looper).
