    • Dalam mitologi Yunani, Europe atau Europa (bahasa Yunani: Ευρώπη Eurṓpē) adalah seorang putri Punisia. Namanya dijadikan sebagai nama benua Eropa serta nama salah satu satelit yang mengelilingi Jupiter. Menurut Hesiodos, Europe adalah anak perempuan Aganor dan Argiope. Kisah penculikan Europe oleh Zeus yang menyamar sebagai seekor banteng merupakan kisah yang berasal dari Kreta.


    Kehidupan awal


    Europa adalah putri dari Raja Aganor yang merupakan pemimpin kerajaan Tirus yang terletak di Fenisia (Phoenicia) yang kini merupakan wilayah Lebanon dan memiliki darah bangsawan Mesir. Europa dideskripsikan sebagai perempuan berwajah cantik dengan rambut kemerahan serta kerap memakai pakaian yang dibuat oleh Nymph atau makhluk-makhluk berwujud wanita cantik penjaga alam dalam mitologi Yunani. Kecantikan Europa akhirnya memikat hati Zeus untuk menjadikannya sebagai istri sekaligus salah satu haremnya.


    Penculikan oleh Zeus


    Zeus yang telah dipenuhi hasrat yang menggebu-gebu akhirnya memutuskan untuk "menculik" Europa dengan menyamar sebagai banteng putih yang menawan. Europa yang sedang bersama teman-temannya pun kagum dengan banteng jinak dan menawan ini hingga Europa naik ke atas punggungnya. Zeus yang menyamar sebagai banteng pun langsung membawa Europa mengarungi lautan lepas meninggalkan teman-temannya hingga berhenti di sebuah daratan dan Europa pun ditinggal sendirian disana.
    Europa yang terdampar di suatu tempat akhirnya kebingungan hingga datang seorang wanita yang memperkenalkan dirinya sebagai Aphrodite, dewi kecantikan dalam mitologi Yunani. Aphrodite mengatakan bahwa banteng yang telah menculik Europa adalah Zeus yang ingin memperistrinya, Aphrodite berjanji bahwa keturunan Zeus dan Europa akan menjadi sosok yang terhormat. Zeus kemudian memunculkan wujud aslinya dan mengatakan bahwa mereka hidup di pulau Kreta dan Zeus menjanjikan bahwa keturunan dari dirinya dan Europa akan menjadi penguasa Kreta. Kemudian lahirlah Raja Minos yang terkenal sebagai "ayah tiri" dari makhluk buas bernama Minotaur.


    Menjadi nama benua di dunia


    Kisah Europa cukup populer dalam masyarakat Yunani Kuno dan Romawi Kuno. Nama Europa digunakan oleh para ahli geografi Yunani Kuno sebagai wilayah di bawah Pegunungan Balkan, Thracia (kini Bulgaria).
    Pemakaian Europa atau Eropa sebagai nama benua baru dideskripsikan dalam catatan-catatan dari abad ke-8 seperti Chronicle of 754 untuk menamai wilayah kekuasaan Raja Charlemagne di wilayah barat yang mayoritas penduduknya beragama Kristen. Tidak diketahui secara pasti mengapa wilayah tersebut dinamakan sebagai Eropa. Nama Europa kini juga jadi nama kompetisi tingkat kedua dan ketiga sepak bola Eropa, UEFA Europa League dan UEFA Europa Conference League. Selain itu, Europa juga dijadikan nama sebuah satelit yang mengelilingi Jupiter, di mana Jupiter juga merupakan nama lain dari Zeus dalam mitologi Romawi.
