Event Horizon Telescope (EHT, "Teleskop horizon peristiwa") adalah proyek untuk membuat susunan teleskop besar yang terdiri dari jaringan teleskop radio dan data dari berbagai stasiun very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) dari seluruh bumi. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengamati daerah sekitar lubang hitam supermasif Sagittarius A* di Pusat Bima Sakti, dan juga sebuah lubang hitam lebih besar di pusat galaksi eliptis jenis cD Messier 87, dengan resolusi sudut sebanding dengan horizon peristiwa lubang hitam tersebut.
Astronom EHT merilis gambar pertama dari lubang hitam di galaksi Messier 87 pada 10 April 2019. Lubang hitam ini diberi nama "Pōwehi", kata yang berasal dari Kumulipo, nyanyian kisah penciptaan dari budaya Hawaii.
Cara kerja
EHT terdiri dari banyak teleskop radio dan observatorium radio di seluruh dunia, dan bertujuan menghasilkan teleskop dengan resolusi sudut dan sensitivitas tinggi. Dengan menggunakan teknik very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), antena-antena dan teleskop-teleskop radio yang masing-masing berdiri sendiri dan terpisah ribuan kilometer dapat digunakan secara bersama-sama membentuk sebuah teleskop virtual, sebanding dengan teleskop berukuran sebesar diameter bumi. Proyek ini melibatkan pengembangan dan pemasangan penerima polarisasi ganda submilimeter, standar frekuensi yang amat stabil untuk memungkinkan VLBI pada 230–450 GHz, sistem backend dan perekam VLBI dengan lebar pita tinggi, serta pengoperasian berbagai stasiun VLBI submilimeter baru.
Sejak mulai mengumpulkan data pada 2006, EHT terus bergerak untuk menambahkan sumber-sumber baru ke dalam jaringan globalnya. Data yang dikumpulkan berbagai teleskop dalam hard drive (cakram keras) diangkut melalui pesawat (proses ini disebut "sneakernet") ke Haystack Observatory di MIT, Massachusetts, Amerika Serikat dan Institut Max Planck untuk Astronomi Radio di Bonn, Jerman. Di kedua tempat ini, data yang terkumpul saling dikorelasikan dan dianalisis dalam sebuah grid atau komputasi terdistribusi yang terdiri dari 800 CPU yang dihubungkan dengan jaringan 40 Gbit/detik.
Citra pertama Sagittarius A*, lubang hitam supermasif di pusat Bima Sakti, dijadwalkan akan dibuat pada April 2017, tetapi karena ditutupnya Teleskop Kutub Selatan selama musim dingin (April hingga Oktober di kutub selatan), pemrosesan datanya tertunda hingga desember 2017.
