Tahun 1949 ia juga mendapatkan gelar Ed.M dari Universitas Illinois serta tahun 1950 mendapatkan gelar Ed.D pada lembaga yang sama.

    Ketika menempuh pendidikan tingkat prasarjana dan tingkat sarjana, Johnson bekerja sebagai guru sekolah umum di Sheboygan dan Wawatosa. Ia juga menjadi kepala Sekolah Koloni dan Latihan di Wisconsin Selatan pada tahun 1946 - 1947. Ia juga menjadi kepala Sekolah Koloni dan Latihan di Wisconsin Selatan pada tahun 1946-1947.
