GISAID Initiative secara luas dipuji karena berhasil berbagi data virus influenza dengan cepat melalui mekanisme berbagi yang unik, dan dikenal karena pentingnya untuk kesehatan global oleh semua menteri kesehatan dalam KTT G20 Hamburg 2017.Inisiatif yang diusulkan melibatkan kemitraan pemerintah swasta antara organisasi nirlaba Freunde von GISAID e.V. dengan pemerintah Republik Federal Jerman, selaku tuan rumah resmi basis data GISAID EpiFlu™, untuk menyediakan akses publik ke koleksi urutan genetik virus influenza paling lengkap dan data klinis serta epidemiologis terkait, Singapura dan Amerika Serikat.
Awalnya karena ancaman global yang ditimbulkan oleh infeksi flu burung H5N1 yang sangat patogen, GISAID memperkenalkan mekanisme berbagi data pada tahun 2008, yang memungkinkan data influenza diakses secara terbuka dan gratis, kepada siapa saja yang secara positif mengidentifikasi dirinya sendiri, dan setuju untuk menghormati hak yang melekat dari para kontributor. Perjanjian akses basis data GISAID untuk memastikan bahwa kontributor data urutan virus tidak kehilangan hak kekayaan intelektual mereka atas data tersebut.

GISAID - Mission
The GISAID Data Science Initiative promotes the rapid sharing of data from priority pathogens including influenza, hCoV-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), hMpxV as well as arboviruses including chikungunya, dengue and zika.

Mar 21, 2023 · Thousands of data contributors from 215 nations and territories trust GISAID’s transparent and equitable data sharing mechanism which incentivizes them to make available their data on currently circulating viruses in near real-time. Among the many global contributors to GISAID are researchers from the China CDC.

GISAID was specifically created as an alternative to public-domain archives (e.g. Genbank) as they do not provide reliable mechanisms to address the concerns of data depositors seeking a transparent exchange of data and the upholding of scientific etiquette.
