Jalan cerita
Latar kejadian Go Set a Watchman adalah 20 tahun dari novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Jean Louise atau Scout telah berumur 26 tahun. Scout kembali ke tempat kelahirannya di Maycomb, Alabama. Kota Maycomb seperti kota tua, kegiatan di kota tersebut berjalan lambat, para penduduk tidak memiliki uang untuk membeli barang. Scout kembali ke Alabama untuk menemui ayahnya yang bernama Atticus Finch. Dalam buku To Kill a Mockingbird, buku Harper Lee sebelum Go Set a Watchman, sosok Finch digambarkan sebagai sosok ayah yang mengajari kedua anaknya yaitu Scout dan Jem nilai-nilai moral seperti menilai individu dari kemampuannya dan mengajarkan untuk tidak rasis kepada orang lain. Konflik puncak dalam novel Go Set a Watchman adalah ketika Scout menjadi orang yang jijik atas kelakukan ayahnya. Dia melihat ayahnya yang berubah menjadi orang yang rasis terhadap orang berkulit hitam. Rasa kagum atas kepribadian ayahnya yang mengajarkan nilai-nilai moral untuk tidak rasis sewaktu dia kecil menjadi hilang. Akhir cerita dari novel ini adalah Scout menjadi orang yang tidak bisa menerima laki-laki yang memiliki sifat rasis kepada orang berkulit hitam. Pandangan dia kepada ayahnya dan kepada Henry, teman Finch menjadi berubah.

=Rasisme yang ditunjukkan dalam novel ini yaitu orang berkulit hitam tidak sepandai orang berkulit putih.
“We’ve agreed that they’re backward, that they’re illiterate, that they’re dirty and comical and shiftless and no good, they’re infants and they’re stupid, some of them, but we haven’t agreed on one thing and we never will. You deny that they’re human.” “How so?” “You deny them hope. Any man in this world, Atticus, any man who has a head and arms and legs, was born with hope in his heart. You won’t find that in the Constitution, I picked that up in church somewhere. They are simple people, most of them, but that doesn’t make them subhuman."
