Heman bin Yoel (bahasa Ibrani: Heman, "setia") adalah salah satu dari tiga orang Lewi yang ditugaskan oleh raja Daud untuk memimpin nyanyian di rumah TUHAN sejak tabut itu mendapat tempat perhentian (setelah dikembalikan oleh orang-orang Filistin dan diletakkan di rumah Abinadab selama hampir 100 tahun, melewati masa jabatan hakim Samuel, pemerintahan raja Saul dan Daud). Mereka dan anak-anak mereka melayani sebagai penyanyi di hadapan Kemah Suci, yakni Kemah Pertemuan, sampai Salomo mendirikan rumah TUHAN di Yerusalem, sesuai dengan peraturannya. Bersama-sama saudara sepupunya, Asaf dan Etan, Heman merupakan "penyanyi" utama, di mana Heman yang disebut pertama dan berdiri di tengah di antara dua yang lain. Ia juga menjabat sebagai "pelihat raja" (= nabi). Ia menggubah Mazmur 88 bersama saudara-saudaranya yang lain dari bani Korah. Dicatat bahwa ia dapat memainkan sejumlah alat musik, terutama ceracap tembaga.

Heman adalah cucu hakim/nabi Samuel, termasuk bani Korah, suku Lewi. Perbuatan buruk ayahnya, Yoel, menjadi salah satu alasan bangsa Israel menuntut untuk dipimpin oleh seorang raja, bukan hakim lagi. Mungkin masa lalu yang pedih inilah yang tergambar dari Mazmur 88 gubahannya, yang memancarkan kesedihan masa kecilnya dan diakhiri dengan kata "kegelapan" (sama seperti dalam bahasa Ibraninya).
