    Jalebi adalah camilan manis yang populer di anak benua India, Asia Barat, dan beberapa bagian Afrika. Makanan ini memiliki banyak nama termasuk jilapi, zelepi, jilebi, jilipi, zulbia, jerry, mushabak, z'labia, atau zalabia.
    Varietas hidangan Asia Selatan ini dibuat dengan menggoreng rendam adonan encer tepung maida (tepung terigu atau tepung serbaguna) dalam bentuk pretzel atau lingkaran, yang kemudian direndam dalam sirup gula. Jalebi dimakan dengan dahi atau rabri (di India Utara) bersama dengan rasa opsional lainnya seperti kewra (air beraroma).
    Hidangan serupa yakni Zalabia, yang berasal dari Afrika Utara, menggunakan adonan yang berbeda dan sirup madu (bahasa Arab: ʻasal) dan air mawar.


    Sejarah



    Resep makanan ini yang paling awal diketahui berasal dari abad ke-10 dalam buku resep Arab Kitab al-Tabikh ("Buku Hidangan") karya Ibn Sayyar al-Warraq. Pada abad ke-13 di Persia. Sebuah buku resep karya Muhammad bin Hasan al-Baghdadi menyebutkan hidangan serupa.
    Menurut kamus sejarah Hobson-Jobson (1903), kata jalebi berasal dari kata Arab zulabiya, atau kata Persia zolbiya. Namun, ada perbedaan antara Zulbiya dan Jalebi India dan Persia karena keduanya tidak tampak serupa dalam penampilan maupun rasa.
    Priyamkara-nrpa-katha, sebuah karya penulis Jain Jinasura, yang disusun sekitar tahun 1450 M, menyebutkan jalebi dalam konteks jamuan makan malam yang diadakan oleh seorang pedagang kaya. Gunyagunabodhini, karya Sansekerta lain yang berasal dari sebelum tahun 1600 Masehi, mencantumkan bahan-bahan dan resep hidangan tersebut, bahan-bahan tersebut identik dengan bahan-bahan yang digunakan untuk menyiapkan jalebi modern. Menurut duta besar India Nagma Malik, jalebi mungkin berasal dari Turki dan kemudian tiba di Tunisia dahulu kala sebelum sampai ke India. Yang lain mengklaim bahwa jalebi diciptakan oleh seorang musisi pada masa pemerintahan khalifah Abbasiyah Harun al-Rashid, Abdourrahman Ibnou Nafaâ Ziriab, yang singgah lama di Tunisia saat bepergian dari Baghdad ke Andalusia.
    Diduga bahwa kue corong Amerika berasal dari masakan Arab dan Persia, yang dibawa oleh imigran Jerman, yang disebut Drechterkuche.
