    Sejarah


    Lagu ini merupakan singel pertama yang dirilis dari album Double Fantasy, dan sekaligus rekaman pertama John Lennon sejak tahun 1975. Menurutnya lagu ini tidak cukup bagus, namun paling cocok untuk memulai lagi semenjak 5 tahun absen berkarier di dunia musik. John Lennon menyebut lagu ini pada saat perekaman sebagai "lagunya Elvis/Orbison", karena ia menirukan cara bernyanyi mereka. Pada bagian awal lagu di album "Double Fantasy Stripped Down" yang dirilis pada tahun 2010, Lennon berkata: "satu ini untuk Gene, dan Eddie, dan Elvis... dan Buddy."


    Komposisi


    Lagu ini ditulis kembali dari versi-versi lagu lama yang diciptakan John, yang berjudul "Don’t Be Crazy" atau "My Life". Ini adalah lagu terakhir yang diselesaikan untuk Double Fantasy. ”Kami tidak mendengarnya sampai hari terakhir sesi rekaman,” menurut keterangan produser Jack Douglas pada tahun 2005. Lennon menulis lagu ini saat sedang berlibur di Bermuda, dan merekamnya di The Hit Factory, New York, beberapa minggu kemudian. Judul asli lagu sebenarnya "Starting Over". Ketika John Lennon tewas ditembak pada tanggal 8 Desember 1980, singel ini berada di posisi 3 di Amerika dan mencapai puncak tangga lagu pada akhir minggu tanggal 27 Desember, membuatnya menjadi lagu hit nomor 1 yang keempat di Amerika Serikat yang dicetak oleh penyanyi yang telah meninggal.
    Di tangga lagu Britania Raya, singel ini awalnya berada di urutan ke-8, kemudian turun ke posisi 21. Setelah kematian John, lagu ini langsung naik ke posisi 1. Sejak tanggal 6 Januari 1981, ada 3 buah lagu John Lennon di Britania Raya yang menempati posisi 5 besar, prestasi yang tidak pernah dicapai dirinya sebelumnya. Dalam daftar Billboard's All Time Top Songs, lagu ini mendapat peringkat ke 53.
