Lower rank kids do jumping jacks, some other cardio type exercise, or Kihon. If they stop the ball before it gets to the Sensei, they get back in line. It seems to help with their reflexes when they're trying to stop the ball. My kids sucked at it at first and now can stop the ball at least half the time. It also makes the Hojo stuff more fun.

Meanwhile my dojo has kids classes every day except Sunday, but it's an established school with their own building, kids play areas, TVs and more. That place is closer to $150.

In my personal opinion, around 7/8 is a good age to start as many children younger than that struggle to concentrate and take the lessons in. Plus, the high amount of light sparring and fun movement drills (ukemi, rolls, etc.) will keep kids interested. Iirc, he was one of the only original Cobra Kai guys in Karate Kid to actually know martial arts before taking on the role, but was encouraged to hide it during his audition because they were looking for “people who could act” over “people who could fight.”
Steve Hindmans (RIP) East Coast Karate. Not sure of lineage, but I know Master Wise someone that would be a part of our BB tests. The school I am apart of now (Husser Brothers Martial Arts, under the IJ Kim TKD), also has a loose (or used to) affiliation with East Coast.

Jan 24, 2023 · Many places that teach kids do it as little more than basic coordination and conditioning. Ask how the teacher how much sparing the students your child's age do? If it is very little, it may not be what you want. IF they do "point karate" where the "fighting" is broken up after the first contact is made, this might not be what you want.
Jan 31, 2023 · In karate the difference between how a trainer runs a kids only class, adults only or mixed, are all very small, they are 99% the same. It’s basically that in the training culture of karate, kids are to a large extent expected to train like in adult practices (maybe some lower contact and lighter sparring rules).
