Nama
Nama Leicester tercatat dalam Sejarah orang Inggris abad ke-9 sebagai Cair Lerion (dari mana Welsh Caerlŷr), dan dalam Kronik Anglo-Saxon sebagai Ligora-ceastre. Dalam Domesday Book of 1086, dicatat sebagai Ledecestre. Elemen pertama dari nama itu, Ligora atau Legora, dijelaskan sebagai nama sungai Brittonic, dalam sebuah saran yang kembali kepada William Somner (1701) nama sebelumnya dari Sungai Melambung, serumpun dengan nama Loire.
