    "Lift Every Voice and Sing" secara terbuka mula-mula dipentaskan sebagai puisi pada perayaan hari ulang tahun Abraham Lincoln oleh saudara Johnson, John. Pada 1919, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) menjulukinya "lagu kebangsaan Negro" untuk kekuatannya dalam menyuarakan tangisan untuk pembebasan dan pemberdayaan bagi orang Afrika-Amerika.
