A Mexican State (Spanish: Estado), officially the Free and Sovereign State (Spanish: Estado libre y soberano), is a constituent federative entity of Mexico according to the Constitution of Mexico. Currently there are 31 states, each with its own constitution, government, state governor, and state congress. In the hierarchy of Mexican administrative divisions, states are further divided into municipalities. Currently there are 2,462 municipalities in Mexico.
Although not formally a state, Mexico City (Spanish: Ciudad de México), the capital city of United Mexican States and a metropolitan area within the State of Mexico since February 5, 2016.
The current Mexican governmental publications usually lists 32 federative entity (31 states and Mexico City), and 2,478 municipalities (includes the 16 boroughs of Mexico City). Third or lower level divisions are sometimes listed by some governmental publications.

The States of Mexico, its capitals, have been configured through historical and cultural facts, the geographical, natural and climatic characteristics of the different regions, which have created a myriad of expressions and cultural expressions recognized worldwide.
Mexico is divided into 32 states (estados) and one federal district. However, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the federal district was renamed to Mexico City and is no longer considered a separate entity.
