Mae Carol Jemison merupakan astronaut perempuan berkulit hitam yang pertama di dunia. Dia lahir pada tanggal 17 Oktober 1956. Dia merupakan anak termuda di keluarganya. Dia berasal dari keluarga yang sangat sederhana, ayahnya seorang tukang kayu dan ibunya seorang guru. Dia merupakan perempuan pertama yang menjadi astronaut yang berasal dari keluarga campuran antara Afrika dan Amerika. Jemison mulai bergabung dengan NASA sejak tanggal 4 Juni 1987. Dia menjadi satu-satunya perempuan pertama yang menjadi astronaut.
Pada tahun 1992 tempatnya pada tanggal 12 September, Jemison mendapat kesempatan untuk terbang ke angkasa untuk menjalankan misi STS47. Dalam misi tersebut dia berangkat dengan teamnya yang berjumlah enam orang, dan dia satu-satunya perempuan yang ikut di dalamnya. Berkat kerja kerasnya dia dia mendapat banyak penghargaan dan gelar Doktor Honoris Causa.
Jemison lahir di Alabama, tumbuh besar di Chicago, dan lulus dari Teknik Kimia Universitas Stanford sekaligus dari Program Studi Afrika-Amerika. Dia kemudian memperoleh gelar dokternya dari Universitas Cornell. Jemison kemudian bertugas sebagai dokter umum di Peace Corps Liberia dan Sierra Leone dari tahun 1983 sampai 1985. Jameson bercita-cita untuk menjadi astronaut, sehingga dia melamar masuk ke NASA. Pada tahun 1993 Jemison meninggalkan NASA dan menirikan perusahaan riset teknologi. Kemudian dia juga mendirikan yayasan pendidikan nirlaba dan berhasil meluncurkan 100 Year Starship project yang disponsori DARPA. Jemison aktif pula menulis beberapa buku untuk anak-anak dan muncul di acara televisi, termasuk di episode Star Trek: The Next Generation tahun 1993.
