Mangonel (berasal dari bahasa Latin manganon, yang berarti "mesin peperangan") adalah sejenis pelontar atau mesin kepung (jentera kepung) pada Abad Pertengahan yang digunakan untuk melontarkan batu untuk menghancurkan dinding atau bangunan yang difortifikasi. Pengertian pasti dari istilah tersebut masih diperdebatkan dan beberapa kemungkinan telah diajukan. Kata mangonel secara tidak langsung dapat mengacu pada mangon, sejenis batu keras dari Prancis yang dapat ditemukan di selatan Prancis. Kata itu mungkin juga merupakan nama dari sejenis mesin artileri berpengimbang (manjanik), kemungkinan mesin berpengimbang yang digerakkan dengan bantuan tenaga manusia, atau jenis senjata yang memiliki kerangka umum semacam itu. Istilah manajaniq dalam bahasa Arab berasal dari kata yang sama, dan digunakan untuk menyebut berbagai jenis manjanik.
Penggunaan
Mangonel memiliki tingkat akurasi yang lebih buruk dibandingkan manjanik (yang diperkenalkan kemudian, tak lama sebelum penemuan dan penggunaan bubuk mesiu yang meluas). Mangonel melontarkan batu berat, namun batu terlontar lambat tetapi memiliki kecepatan yang lebih tinggi daripada manjanik dan dirancang untuk menghancurkan tembok, bukan melewatinya. Mangonel lebih cocok digunakan pada medan perang.
Mangonel melontarkan batu yang diletakkan pada wadah yang berada di ujung lengan pelontar. Wadah ini dapat melontarkan batu lebih banyak dibandingkan pelontar biasa, hal ini membuatnya berbeda daripada onager. Pada pertempuran, mangonel dapat melontarkan batu, benda terbakar (melontarkan periuk berapi; periuk ini diisi dengan bahan yang mudah terbakar sehingga akan terbakar ketika mengenai sasaran), dan lain-lain. Mangonel dapat digunakan untuk melontarkan mayat, yang sudah sepenuhnya hancur, dan juga sisa tubuh binatang dan manusia. Mayat tersebut dilontarkan untuk mengancam, menakuti, dan membuat musuh terkena penyakit. Taktik tersebut kadang terbukti efektif. Suplai makanan yang tidak mencukupi, dikarenakan rusaknya dan rendahnya gizi makanan, dan juga buruknya kebersihan, dianggap sebagai siasat penyebaran penyakit. Bagaimanapun, prinsip mangonel pada peperangan, terutama peperangan Abad Pertengahan, mangonel digunakan untuk menghancurkan istana dan infrastruktur lainnya, bukan membunuh atau menakuti musuh.
