    Maputo adalah ibu kota sekaligus kota terbesar di Mozambique. Sebuah pelabuhan di Samudra Hindia, ekonominya berkisar di sekitar pelabuhan. Batu bara, kapas, gula, Kromit, Sisal, kopra, dan kayu keras adalah ekspor utamanya. Kota ini juga memproduksi semen, Tembikar, furnitur, sepatu, dan karet. Ada juga pabrik pelebur aluminium. Kota ini dikelilingi oleh Provinsi Maputo.
    Maputo terletak di tepi barat Teluk Maputo, di mulut Sungai Tembe. Teluk ini memiliki panjang 95 km (50 mil) dan lebar 30 km (20 mil). Sungai Maputo mengalir menuju sisi selatan teluk.
    Didirikan pada akhir abad ke-18, kota ini dinamakan Lourenço Marques dari Lourenço Marques, pedagang Portugal yang pertama menjelajahi wilayah ini pada 1544. Pada 1895, pembangunan jalur rel ke Pretoria, Afrika Selatan menyebabkan populasi kota ini tumbuh. Pada 1898, Lourenço Marques menjadi ibu kota Mozambique. Pada Perang Boer, Winston Churchill, setelah ditangkap oleh suku Boer, membuat pelarian yang berani ke Lourenço Marques. Setelah kemerdekaan kota ini diubah namanya menjadi Maputo.

Maputo adalah kota yang relatif kering, dengan curah hujan rata-rata 813,6 milimeter (32,0 inci) per tahun. Curah hujan berlimpah selama musim panas dan hanya sedikit selama musim dingin. Kota ini memiliki iklim yang relatif hangat dengan suhu rata-rata 22,8 °C (73,0 °F). Bulan terpanas adalah Januari dengan suhu rata-rata 26.8 °C (80.2 °F), sedangkan bulan paling keren adalah Juli dengan suhu rata-rata 18.8 °C (65.8 °F).
