Mary Shelley (30 Agustus 1797 – 1 Februari 1851) adalah seorang novelis Inggris, dikenal dengan novelnya Frankenstein. Ia menikah dengan penyair Romantisme Percy Bysshe Shelley. Frankenstein dianggap sebagai novel horor fiksi ilmiah pertama. Meski ketenarannya berasal dari karya klasik tersebut, Shelly meninggalkan banyak sekali karya dengan genre dan pengaruh yang beragam. Shelley adalah seorang kritikus, esais, penulis perjalanan, sastrawan, dan editor karya suaminya. Ayah Mary Shelley adalah seorang filsuf politik William Godwin sedangkan ibunya adalah seorang filsuf dan aktivis feminis, Mary Wollstonecraft.
Mary Wollstonecraft, ibu Shelly, meninggal kurang dari sebulan setelah melahirkannya. Ia lantas dibesarkan dengan didikan informal yang kaya oleh ayahnya yang juga mendorong Shelly untuk mematuhi teori politik anarkis. Ketika Shelly berusia empat tahun, ayahnya menikah lagi dengan dengan Mary Jane Clairmont, tetangga Shelly, yang dengannya Shelley memiliki hubungan yang bermasalah.
Di 1814 Shelly memulai hubungan asmara dengan salah satu pengikut politik ayahnya, Percy Bysshe Shelly, yang sudah menikah. Bersama saudara tirinya, Claire Clairmont, dia dan Percy berangkat ke Perancis dan melakukan perjalanan keliling Eropa. Sekembalinya ke Inggris, Shelly mengandung anak Percy. Di tempat itulah Shelley menyusun ide untuk novel ikoniknya Frankenstein. Keluarga Shelley meninggalkan Inggris pada tahun 1818 ke Italia, di mana anak kedua dan ketiga mereka meninggal sebelum Shelley melahirkan anak terakhir dan satu-satunya yang masih hidup, Percy Florence Shelley.
Pada 1822 suami Shelly tewas ketika kapal layar yang ditumpanginya tenggelam saat badai di dekat Viareggio. Setahun kemudian, Shelley kembali ke Inggris dan sejak saat itu mengabdikan dirinya untuk membesarkan putranya dan berkarir sebagai penulis profesional. Dekade terakhir hidupnya dirundung penyakit, kemungkinan besar disebabkan oleh tumor otak yang membunuhnya pada usia 53 tahun.
Sampai tahun 1970-an, Shelley dikenal terutama karena usahanya untuk menerbitkan karya suaminya dan untuk novelnya Frankenstein, yang tetap dibaca secara luas dan telah mengilhami banyak adaptasi teater dan film. Studi terbaru telah menghasilkan pandangan yang lebih komprehensif tentang pencapaian Shelley.
