Mezuzah (Ibrani: מְזוּזָה "tiang pintu"; jamak: מְזוּזוֹת mezuzot) adalah sepotong perkamen (sering dimuat dalam kotak dekoratif) bertuliskan ayat Ibrani tertentu dari Taurat (Ulangan 6:4–9 dan Ulangan 11:13–21). Ayat-ayat ini terdiri dari doa Yahudi "Shema Yisrael", dimulai dengan kalimat: "Dengarlah, hai orang Israel, Adonai Tuhan kita, Adonai itu Esa"(Adonai = kata ganti nama kudus יהוה = YHWH )
Mezuzah ditempelkan pada kusen pintu di rumah Yahudi untuk memenuhi mitzvah (perintah Alkitab) untuk menuliskan kata-kata Shema "pada tiang pintu rumahmu" (Ulangan 6:9). Beberapa menafsirkan hukum Yahudi memasang Mezuzah ini pada setiap pintu di rumah, kecuali kamar mandi dan bilik pakaian karena dianggap terlalu kecil untuk memenuhi syarat sebagai kamar. Perkamen disiapkan oleh penulis yang telah memenuhi syarat ("sofer Stam") yang telah menjalani bertahun-tahun pelatihan yang cermat sekali, dan ayat-ayat yang ditulis menggunakan tinta hitam yang tidak bisa dihapus dengan pena bulu ayam khusus. Perkamen tersebut kemudian digulung dan ditempatkan di dalam benda tersebut.
Pemasangan Mezuzah
Menurut halakha, Mezuzah harus ditempatkan di sisi kanan dari pintu atau tiang pintu, di sepertiga atas kusen pintu (yaitu sekitar tinggi bahu ), dalam jarak kurang lebih 3 inci ( 8 cm ) dari tepi pintu. Perawatan harus dilakukan dengan tidak merobek atau merusak perkamen atau kata-kata di atasnya, karena hal ini akan membatalkan Mezuzah yang dianggap bagian Taurat. Umumnya halakha mengharuskan mezuzot ditempelkan dalam waktu 30 hari setelah pindah ke rumah kontrakan atau apartemen. Hal ini berlaku untuk orang Yahudi yang tinggal secara diaspora (yaitu, di luar Tanah Israel). Untuk membeli rumah atau apartemen di daerah diaspora, atau tinggal di Israel ( milik sendiri atau disewa ), Mezuzah ditempelkan segera setelah menempati tempat tinggal. Alasan untuk perbedaan ini adalah ada asumsi bahwa ketika seorang Yahudi hidup di Israel, Israel akan tetap menjadi tempat tinggal permanen, sedangkan rumah di diaspora bersifat sementara.
Bilamana pintu cukup lebar, Yahudi Ashkenazi memiringkan Mezuzah sehingga berposisi miring keatas menuju ruang di mana pintu terbuka. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengakomodasi varian pendapat abad pertengahan dari Rabbi Rashi dan Rabbeinu Tam, tentang apakah itu harus ditempatkan secara horizontal atau vertikal, dan juga mengisyaratkan bahwa Adonai dan Taurat (yang melambangkan Mezuzah) memasuki ruangan. Kebanyakan Sefardi, Mizrahi dan non - Yahudi Ashkenazi menempelkan Mezuzah secara vertikal, meskipun Yahudi Spanyol dan Portugis yang tinggal di negara-negara dimana mayoritas Yahudi Ashkenazi biasanya menempelkan miring.
Prosedur ini untuk memasang Mezuzah pada tempat dimana ia akan ditempelkan, kemudian membacakan berkah:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשַׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לִקְבּוֹעַ מְזוּזָה
Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha‘olam, asher kideshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu likboa‘ mezuzah.
Terpujilah Engkau, Adonai Eloheinu kita, Raja Semesta Alam, yang menyucikan kami dengan mitzvot-Nya (Perintah-perintah-Nya), dan memerintahkan kita untuk menempelkan Mezuzah.
Setiap orang Yahudi dapat membaca berkat asalkan ia cukup tua untuk bisa memahami pentingnya mitzvah tersebut. Setelah pengucapan berkat, Mezuzah dipasang.
Memeriksa perkamen
Banyak orang Yahudi yang taat dari semua denominasi Yahudi memiliki seseorang pemeriksa yang telah memenuhi syarat untuk memeriksa perkamen mezuzot dari cacat (seperti air mata kecil atau huruf pudar) setidaknya dilakukan dua kali setiap tujuh tahun.
