Biografi
Michael Brecker mulai belajar musik dari ayahnya, seorang pianis jazz amatir, saat ia dukuk di sekolah dasar. Pada waktu Michael masih kecil, ayahnya sering memutar piringan hitam dari beberapa pemusik jazz terkemuka seperti; Dave Brubeck, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, dan banyak lainnya. Awalnya ia mempelajari instrumen klarinet. Kemudian di Sekolah Menengah Atas, ia memutuskan untuk beralih mempelajari tenor saksofon dan bergabung dengan grup musik rock dan R&B. Pada tahun 1969, selesai dari universitas di Indiana, ia pindah ke New York dan bergabung pada grup musik bealiran fusion bernama Dreams.
Pada tahun 1973, ia mulai bermain dengan Horace Silver Kwintet bersama kakaknya Randy, bermain dengan Billy Cobham, dan kemudian mendirikan grup musik bersama kakaknya Randy Brecker, dengan memainkan musik funk yang dinamakan Brecker Brothers. Menurut beberapa kalangan jazz, musik Brecker Brothers mengikuti apa yang telah dirintis oleh Miles Davis dan Weather Report, yaitu musik yang kelak disebut jazz fusion, namun Michael memiliki aransemen yang lebih tertata rapih, lebih banyak unsur rock dan funk yang lebih berat. Tahun berikutnya ia mulai banyak bermain dengan Brecker Brothers, dan nama Brecker Brothers mulai banyak dikenal. Ia dan Randy juga ikut mengelola sebuah club jazz di Manhattan, tepatnya di 7th Avenue South New York. Setelah itu, ia mulai bertemu Mike Maineiri, Eddie Gomez, dan drummer Steve Gadd. Pada tahun 1979 akhirnya ia membentuk formasi Steps Ahead. Steve Gadd kelak digantikan oleh Peter Erskine.
Pada waktu yang bersamaan Michael juga sering mengisi rekaman sebagai solois saksofon di banyak album dari artis-artis atau grup musik ternama seperti; James Taylor, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Joni Mitchell, Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Williams, dan Frank Zappa. Kemudian ia mulai membuat album solonya yang pertama pada tahun 1987, di usianya yang ke 38 tahun.
Di awal tahun 80-an sewaktu ia masih bersama Steps Ahead, ia juga sudah mulai menggunakan EWI (Elektric Wind Instrument), yaitu sebuah alat tambahan yang digunakan pada saksofonnya hingga sanggup menghasilkan suara-suara layaknya synthesizer, dengan menggunakan teknologi MIDI. Ia sempat membantu McCoy Tyner pada tahun 1995, dan rekamannya bersama McCoy Tyner mendapat sambutan hangat dari kalangan jazz Amerika Serikat. Kemudian ia kembali melakukan tur bersama Brecker Brothers dan menghasilkan album Two Blocks from the Edge pada tahun 1998. Setahun kemudian kembali merilis Time is of the Essence (menampilkan solois-solois jazz papan atas seperti Pat Metheny, pemain organ Larry Goldings, drummer Elvin Jones, Jeff "Tain" Watts dan Bill Stewart).
Pada awal tahun 2000, merilis Nearness of You dan Wide Angels, kemudian juga diikuti pada tahun 2001 dan 2003. Pada Januari tahun 2002, Nearness of You meraih " Record of the Year," dan Michael Brecker mendapat anugerah "Artist of the Year" keduanya adalah hasil jejak pendapat dari pembaca majalah Japan's Swing Journal, yang tidak lain adalah penerbit majalah jazz terbesar di dunia. Di Juni tahun 2002, ia membuat sebuah rekaman konser live di Toronto Massey Hall, yang tema acaranya adalah merayakan kejayaan dari lahirnya musik yang diperkenalkan Miles Davis dan John Coltrane. Ia dan teman-temannya seperti Herbie Hancock dan Roy Hargrove tercatat sebagai pemain yang paling sering mengadakan konser di seluruh dunia pada dua tahun terakhir sebelum ia meninggal dunia. Para dokter ahli telah mencoba melakukan pencangkokan sumsum tulang belakang, dengan mengambil donor darah untuk tranplantasi sel induk dari putrinya, namun gagal.
