Nafs berasal dari bahasa arab (النفس), merupakan satu kata yang memiliki banyak makna (lafzh al-Musytaraq) dan dipahami sesuai dengan penggunaanya. Kata nafs terdapat dalam Al-Qur’an dengan makna yang berbeda. Terkadang ditujukan pada hakikat jiwa, yaitu terdiri dari tubuh dan ruh. Jiwa disebut juga nafs karena ia banyak keluar masuk dari tubuh manusia. Menurut ahli tasawuf, nafs diartikan sesuatu yang melahirkan sifat tercela. Al-Ghazali menyebut nafs sebagai pusat potensi marah dan syahwat pada manusia. Dalam kamus besar Bahasa Indonesia, nafs (nafsu) juga dipahami dorongan hati yang kuat untuk berbuat kurang baik. Nafs dalam diri manusia memiliki berbagai fungsi, antara lain untuk membuat gagasan, berpikir dan merenung, yang pada akhirnya menghasilkan keputusan apa yang harus diperbuat. Itulah sebabnya kualitas nafs yang telah terbentuk pada seseorang akan membentuk sistem pengendalian pribadi.

= Nafsu Ammarah Bissu’

Nafsu Ammarah Bissu’ selalu melepaskan diri dari tantangan dan tidak mau menentang, bahkan patuh tunduk saja kepada nafsu syahwat dan panggilan syaitan. Ciri khas nafs ammarah adalah ia membawa manusia kepada keburukan yang bertentangan dengan kesempurnaannya serta bertolak belakang dari keadaan akhlaknya dan ia menginginkan manusia supaya berjalan pada jalan yang tidak baik atau buruk.




= Nafsu Lawwamah

Nafsu ini belum sempurna ketenangannya karena selalu menentang atau melawan kejahatan tetapi suatu saat teledor dan lalai berbakti kepada Allah, sehingga dicela dan disesalinya.




= Nafsu Muthmainnah

=
Nafsu ini tenang pada saat jauh dari kegoncangan yang di sebabkan oleh bermacam-macam tantangan dan dari bisikan syetan. Di katakan juga jiwa yang tenang, yaitu jiwa yang telah menerima pencerahan, ketenangan dan kedamaian, sebab telah terlepas dari pengaruh hawa nafsu materi, hewani, dan kemakhlukan.
