Nepidae adalah famili yang mencakup serangga-serangga Heteroptera yang sepenuhnya hidup di air, dalam ordo Hemiptera. Mereka umumnya dikenal sebagai kalajengking air karena kemiripan superfisialnya dengan kalajengking, karena kaki depannya yang raptorial dan adanya prosesus panjang dan ramping yang mencuat dari ujung abdomennya, yang mirip ekor. Terdapat 14 genera dalam famili ini, yang terbagi menjadi dua subfamili, Nepinae dan Ranatrinae. Anggota-anggota genus Ranatra, yang menjadi genus kalajengking air yang paling tersebar luas dan paling banyak spesiesnya, terkadang dikenal sebagai serangga kayu air atau serangga jarum karena mereka lebih ramping dari Nepa.
Meski kalajengking air tidak menyengat dengan ekornya (ekor tersebut digunakan untuk bernapas), mereka memiliki gigitan yang menyakitkan (lebih tepatnya, mereka menyengat dengan belalainya yang runcing), namun hal ini jauh lebih tidak berbahaya daripada sengatan kalajengking sungguhan.
