Octobass adalah alat musik dawai berbusur yang sangat besar dan langka (hanya 7 yang ada) yang pertama kali dibuat sekitar tahun 1850 di Paris oleh luthier (pembuat alat musik dawai) Prancis Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875). Octobass memiliki tiga senar dan pada dasarnya adalah versi yang lebih besar dari kontrabas (spesimen dalam koleksi Musée de la Musique di Paris memiliki panjang 3,48 m (11,4 ft), sedangkan kontrabas umumnya memiliki panjang sekitar 2 m (6 ft 7 in)). Karena panjang papan jari dan ketebalan dawai yang sangat besar, musisi yang memainkan menggunakan sistem tuas dan pedal. Octobass belum pernah diproduksi pada skala besar atau banyak digunakan oleh komposer (meskipun Hector Berlioz menulis pujian tentang instrumen tersebut dan mengusulkannya untuk adopsi). Selain instrumen yang di Paris, octobass ada dalam koleksi Museum Alat Musik di Phoenix, Arizona dan Kunsthistorisches Museum di Wina.
Pada Oktober 2016, Montreal Symphony Orchestra disumbangkan sebuah octobass oleh perusahaan Quebek Canimex dan sekarang satu-satunya orkestra di dunia yang memilikinya. Alat musik ini dibuat oleh luthier Jean-Jacques Pagès di Mirecourt, Prancis pada tahun 2010.
Jangkauan dan penyetelan
Menurut Berlioz, tiga senar terbuka yang disetel C1, G1, dan C2. Setelan ini memberikan kisaran rendah satu oktaf di bawah cello dan sama dengan kontrabas modern dengan ekstensi C rendah. Namun, pada saat octobass diciptakan, double bass tidak memiliki ekstensi ini dan bisa turun hanya ke E1 atau G1. Mekanismenya memungkinkan setiap dawai untuk mencakup rentang seperlima yang sempurna secara kromatis dan memberikan instrumen rentang yang tinggi untuk G2. Alat musik di Musée de la Musique di Paris, yang menggunakan dawai usus yang akurat secara periode, disetel dengan demikian (meskipun setidaknya pada beberapa rekaman penalaan secara keseluruhan adalah mol setengah langkah).

Octobass pada Montreal Symphony Orchestra menggunakan senar usus, disetel A0, E1, B1, dan memiliki jangkauan yang tinggi ke F♯2.
