Sejarah



Huruf P berasal dari huruf Proto-Semit Pi’t yang berarti "mulut", yang juga menurunkan huruf Fenisia pe, serta huruf-huruf Yunani (Pi) dan Etruska yang berkembang dari huruf Fenisia tersebut. Semuanya melambangkan bunyi /p/, yaitu konsonan letup dwibibir nirsuara.
Bangsa Etruska mengadaptasi alfabet Yunani dan mengubah beberapa bentuk hurufnya, termasuk Pi yang melambangkan bunyi /p/. Lengkungan pada huruf P Etruska tidak tertutup, dan pada beberapa variasi, lengkungan itu justru tertutup; variasi bentuk tertutup tersebut juga merupakan lambang bunyi /r/ dalam alfabet Etruska. Bangsa Romawi mengadaptasinya dan menetapkan bentuknya sebagai P, sehingga menyerupai bentuk huruf R dalam alfabet Etruska dan huruf Ro dalam alfabet Yunani. Meskipun demikian, nilai bunyinya berbeda. Untuk melambangkan bunyi /r/, akhirnya bentuk varian dari Ro dengan garis diagonal () diadaptasi menjadi huruf R oleh bangsa Romawi.




Penggunaan


Dalam bahasa Indonesia, Melayu, Inggris dan berbagai bahasa yang memakai alfabet Latin, huruf P melambangkan bunyi konsonan letup dwibibir nirsuara.
Satu dwihuruf dalam bahasa Inggris dan Prancis yang melibatkan huruf P ialah "ph" yang menandakan bunyi konsonan desis bibir-gigi nirsuara /f/, dan digunakan untuk mengalihaksarakan huruf Phi (φ) dalam kata-kata pinjaman bahasa Yunani. Dalam bahasa Jerman, dwihuruf "pf" yang menandakan konsonan gesek bibir /pf/ kerap dijumpai.
Penutur bahasa Arab tidak biasa menyebut bunyi /p/ karena dalam bahasa mereka tidak ada bunyi konsonan ini; sebaliknya mereka cenderung menyebutnya seperti /b/ atau /v/.
