Pathet adalah pengaturan nada gamelan atau musik tradisional Jawa. Pathet berlaku dalam laras gamelan pelog maupun slendro. Pathet memberikan keindahan dan harmonisasi pukulan gamelan. Setiap pathet memiliki urutan nada tersendiri yang berbeda satu dengan yang lain. Dalam pentas pewayangan pathet memberikan tanda waktu dan adegan yang sedang berlangsung. Pembatasan nada beserta pengaturannya mengandung makna filosofis dalam budaya Jawa terutama dalam pementasan wayang. Dalam pertunjukan wayang di Surakarta secara umum dikenal tiga pathet yaitu, nem, sanga, dan manyura.
Jenis dan Penggunaan Pathet
Menurut jenisnya, secara umum terdapat beberapa pathet untuk laras pelog dan slendro. Adapun jenis pathet dalam laras slendro adalah sebagai berikut:
Slendro
Nem: 6-5-3-2
Sanga: 2-1-6-5
Manyura: 3-2-1-6
Sementara pathet untuk laras pelog adalah sebagai berikut :
Pélog
Lima: 5-4-2-1 (lama) atau 5-3-2-1 (baru)
Nem: 2-1-6-5
Barang: 3-2-7-6
Manyura: 3-2-1-6
Setiap pathet menjadi tanda waktu sebuah pertunjukan wayang sedang berlangsung. Pathet nem dipakai untuk membuka pertunjukan wayang yang dimulai pukul 21.00. Pathet nem mengirigi adegan istana sampai dengan adegan perang pada pukul 24.00 Setelah adegan perang sampai adegan pertapaan digunakan pathet sanga. Pathet sanga berakhir pada pukul 03.00. Pertunjukan wayang diakhiri dengan pathet Manyura.
Pathet dan Seni Pedalangan
Penyajian iringan dan instrumen gamelan secara berurutan dari pathet nem, sanga, dan manyura membentuk sebuah alur dramatis musikal semakin menanjak. Pathet nem menempati posisi paling rendah, pathet sanga berada di tengah, dan pathet manyura berada di posisi yang paling tinggi. Pathet nem mendukung adegan-adegan awal yang merupakan pengenalan. Kemudian adegan-adegan perumitan masalah diiringi dengan musik-musik pathet sanga. Pathet manyura mengiringi adegan-adegan klimaks sampai pada penyelesaian masalah. Maka hubungan antara pathet dan seni pedalangan adalah membangun alur dramatik cerita dalam pewayangan.
Pathet juga menyesuaikan dengan percapakan-percakapan tokoh. Pathet nem sebagai pengiring adegana awal mengiringi adegan-adegan perkenalan. Maka tempo dan pukulan pun cenderung lebih pelan. Sementara dalam adegan-adegan perumitan masalah dengan dialog yang lebih sedikit, tempo mulai menanjak pada pathet sanga. Adegan perang dan klimaks lebih sedikit lagi dialog yang digunakan maka tempo semakin cepat lagi. Penurunan tempo mulai tampak dalam adegan-adegan penyelesaian konflik, karena mulai muncul banyak dialog. Penurunan tempo ditandai dengan peralihan dari pathet sanga ke manyura.
