Jan 23, 2025 · Obviously there is a greater chance of wide variation in the leaves growing from those trees and shrubs such as poplar and highbush cranberry that have indeterminate shoot growth. Also, if one wishes to identify the variety of a tree by its leaves, one should be sure to gather leaves from the old growth.

Aug 16, 2010 · The tallest trees are not always the winners of The Big Tree Challenge; foresters score trees on height, circumference and the spread of a tree’s crown. The black spruce on the UAF campus is taller than the state record western paper birch, a 67-footer near Haines, and Alaska’s tallest balsam poplar, a 60-foot tree on the Kuskokwim River.
Boreal owls perform by daylight - Geophysical Institute
Jun 28, 2018 · Just beneath the owl box, hung 20 feet up the stem of a balsam poplar, the backyard barbeque continued late into the evening. With a vole in its talons, the hand-sized bird perched on a branch outside a wooden box nailed to the tree.
The galloping glacier’s recent dramas - Geophysical Institute
Aug 22, 2024 · Later in the day, we visit a grove of spruce and poplar trees a few miles north of Black Rapids Lodge. Here, 30 years before George Washington was born, a wall of water left a giant iceberg behind. What remains is a massive crater in which trees now grow. The hole from the long-gone iceberg is still 30 feet deep.
Memories of souls in a winter birch forest - Geophysical Institute
Dec 7, 2023 · She gestured to a tree that — somewhat unusual for a birch here — has branches that extend straight outward from the trunk. “I kind of felt like I was walking into a hug.” That sentence hit this observer right in the heart. She pointed out that the birch tree representing her father stands between trees chosen for Moore and Germann.
Alaska beetles survive 'unearthly' temperatures
Mar 1, 2012 · The red flat bark beetle lives as far north as there are balsam poplar trees in Alaska, hunkering down for the winter in the moist area between dead bark and tree. Scientists like Todd Sformo have found most of them in the larval stage, where they resemble segmented worms a bit longer than a grain of rice.

Hardwood, Softwood, Fuelwood - Geophysical Institute
Oct 3, 1990 · Fortunately, the practical Alaskan wood-harvester doesn't have to delve so intimately into the sex lives of trees to tell a softwood from a hardwood. Our conifers--spruce, cedar, hemlock, and the other trees with needles and cones--are softwoods. The leafy deciduous trees--poplar, willow, birch, alder--are hardwoods.
