Serpico adalah film drama kejahatan neo-noir Amerika Serikat tahun 1973 yang disutradarai oleh Sidney Lumet dan dibintangi oleh Al Pacino. Waldo Salt dan Norman Wexler menulis skenario, film ini mengadaptasi biografi dari seorang petugas NYPD bernama Frank Serpico yang ditulis Peter Maas, yang menyamar untuk mengungkap korupsi di kepolisian.




Plot


Bekerja sebagai petugas patroli berseragam, Frank Serpico unggul dalam setiap penugasan. Dia pindah ke tugas berpakaian preman, di mana ia perlahan-lahan menemukan sebuah dunia tersembunyi, yakni korupsi di kalangan rekan-rekannya sendiri. Setelah menyaksikan polisi melakukan kekerasan, mengambil hadiah, dan bentuk lain dari korupsi polisi, Serpico memutuskan untuk mengekspos apa yang telah dilihatnya, tetapi ia dilecehkan dan diancam oleh rekan-rekannya. Perjuangannya mengarah ke pertikaian di dalam tubuh kepolisian, ia mendapatkan masalah dalam hubungan pribadinya, dan hidupnya pun terancam. Akhirnya, setelah ditembak di wajah pada tanggal 3 Februari 1971, ia bersaksi di hadapan Komisi Knapp, komisi pemerintah yang melakukan penyelidikan tentang korupsi di tubuh polisi khususnya NYPD antara tahun 1970 dan 1972. Setelah menerima Medali Kehormatan New York City Police Department dan pensiun, Serpico mengundurkan diri dari kepolisian dan pindah ke Swiss.
