Sukhum (bahasa Georgia: სოხუმი; bahasa Abkhaz: Аҟəа) adalah ibu kota Abkhazia, sebuah negara pecahan Georgia yang tidak diakui dunia internasional. Pada 1989, Sukhum berpenduduk 121.406 jiwa.
Sukhum terletak di tepi Laut Hitam di bagian barat Georgia. Kota ini terkenal dengan resor, pantai, sanatorium, spa dan iklim semi tropis. Sukhum dilayani dengan Bandara Dranda Sukhum. Di sini juga terdapat taman botani bersejarah yang dibangun tahun 1840. Dari 1945 hingga 1954, sebuah laboratorium fisika di Sukhum terlibat dalam program pengembangan senjata nuklir Uni Soviet. Hingga 1992, Sukhum merupakan kota multi-kultur; terdapat sembilan bahasa yang dipertuturkan oleh penduduk setempat.
Voronya — gua terdalam di dunia sepanjang 2.080 m — terletak di pegunungan di sekitar Sukhum, tepatnya di daerah Krubera.
Sejarah
Sebuah koloni Yunani bernama Dioscurias didirikan di wilayah ini — kemudian disebut Sebastopolis — pada 6 SM. Namanya lalu berubah menjadi Sukhum-Kale semasa pendudukan Turki. Rusia menguasainya pada 1810.
Dampak perang Georgia-Abkhazia pada 1990-an dapat dirasakan di Sukhum — beberapa bangunan penting, seperti Museum Arsip, rata dengan tanah. Walaupun kota ini beransur-ansur pulih, kondisinya tidak lagi seperti pra-perang, dan keberagaman etnik masih belum tercapai.
Monumen
Sukhum adalah tempat bagi sejumlah monumen bersejarah, terutama jembatan beratap Beslet yang dibangun pada masa pemerintahan ratu Tamar dari Georgia pada abad ke-12. Juga masih terlihat sisa-sisa monumen yang sudah hancur, sepeti tembok Romawi, kastel Bagrat III dari abad ke-11, beberapa menara di tembok besar Abkhazia yang dibangun oleh pangeran Abkhazia dan Mingrelia pada masa modern awal di tengah sengketa wilayah mereka; Benteng Genoa dari abad ke-14, dan benteng Ottoman dari abad ke-18. Menurut cerita, Gereja Kaman dari abad ke-11 (12 km dari Sukhum) didirikan di atas makam Santo John Chrysostom. Sekitar 22 km dari Sukhum terdapat kota New Athos bersama dengan reruntuhan kota abad pertengahan, Anakopia. Biara New Athos dibangun pada tahun 1880-an atas perintah Tsar Alexander III dari Rusia. Sedangkan di pegunungan di utara terdapat Gua Voronya, gua terdalam di dunia, dengan kedalaman 2.140 meter.
