Seperti cerita lain yang ditulis Abe, mengeksplorasi keterasingan sosial manusia modern dari masyarakat perkotaan. Ditulis dalam perspektif naratif orang pertama, dan terdiri dari prolog, tiga "buku catatan" (hitam, abu-abu, dan putih), dan surat penutup dari istri protagonis. Pada tahun 1966, novel ini diadaptasi menjadi film yang disutradarai oleh Hiroshi Teshigahara.


    Plot


    Sebuah kecelakaan industri telah membakar wajah Pak Okuyama, seorang ilmuwan plastik. Istrinya muak dengan cacatnya dan menolak untuk berhubungan seksual dengannya. Dalam upaya untuk mendapatkan kembali kasih sayang istrinya, dia mencoba membuat topeng prostetik di apartemen sewaan. Dengan "wajah" baru ini, protagonis melihat dunia dengan cara baru dan memulai perselingkuhan rahasia dengan istrinya yang terasing. Meskipun topeng tersebut memberikan Okuyama kebebasan yang baru ditemukan, di akhir cerita, menjadi sulit untuk menentukan apakah topeng tersebut telah mengambil alih kepemilikan pria tersebut atau pria tersebut telah mengambil kepemilikan atas wajahnya.
    Ada juga subplot yang mengikuti seorang perempuan hibakusha yang menderita luka bakar di sisi kanan wajahnya. Dalam novel, protagonis melihat karakter ini dalam sebuah film; dalam versi film, hal ini sengaja dikaburkan.
