Thekla (Θέκλα; meninggal sekitar 823) adalah permaisuri pertama sebagai istri Mikhaēl II dari Kekaisaran Romawi Timur.




Keluarga


Menurut Teofanis, Thekla adalah putri seorang Strategos dari Anatolikon, di mana Mikhaēl bekerja. Pada catatan ini, ayahandanya dikenali sebagai jenderal dan pemberontak kemudian Vardanis Tourkos. Mikhaēl, bersama dengan Leo V orang Armenia dan Tomaž dari Slavia, adalah rekan seperjuangan Vardanis, meskipun selama pemberontakannya pada musim panas 803, baik Mikhaēl maupun Leo mengabaikannya.
Thekla dan Mikhaēl diketahui memiliki seorang putra, Kaisar Teofilos (813 – 20 Januari 842). Diduga mereka memiliki seorang putri bernama Helena, tetapi terdapat kontradiksi antara sumber yang berbeda. Helena dikenal sebagai istri Teofobos, seorang patriark yang dieksekusi pada 842 karena bersekongkol untuk merebut takhta. Georgios Amartolos dan Teofanis menyatakan bahwa dia menikahi saudara perempuan Permaisuri Theodora. Genesios mencatat Teofobos menikahi saudara perempuan Kaisar Teofilos. Apabila Helena adalah saudara perempuan atau ipar Teofilos dengan demikian tidak jelas.




Permaisuri


Pada 820, Leo V menuduh mantan rekan seperjuangannya Mikhaēl berkonspirasi melawannya. Mikhaēl dipenjarakan tetapi rekan konspiratornya merencanakan pembunuhan Leo di katedral Hagia Sophia pada Natal 820. Leo memasuki katedral tanpa senjata dan dengan demikian gagal membela diri. Mikhaēl menggantikannya sebagai kaisar dengan Thekla sebagai permaisuri baru.
Masa jabatannya sebagai Augusta berlangsung singkat dan biasa-biasa saja. Dia meninggal pada sekitar 823. Mikhaēl kemudian menikahi Eufrosyni, putri Konstantinus VI.

Apr 20, 2024 · Regional tradition is that the Seleucia where Thekla spent most of her life is the place now called Silifke on the Turkish coast SE of Konya (Iconium), and opposite the north coast of Cyprus. There is now a modern main road from Konya to Silifke. There is a rock church dedicated to Thekla there.
