Theropoda (Pelafalan Inggris: , dari bahasa Yunani yang berarti "kaki binatang") adalah klad dinosaurus yang memiliki tulang berongga dan tiga jari kaki. Theropoda biasanya diklasifikasikan sebagai kelompok dinosaurus Saurischia. Theropoda secara garis keturunan adalah karnivora, meskipun sejumlah kelompok theropoda berkembang menjadi herbivora, omnivora, dan insektivora. Theropoda pertama kali muncul pada periode Trias akhir 231.4 juta tahun yang lalu dan termasuk karnivora darat tunggal besar dari awal periode Jura sampai periode Kapur (periode) sekitar 66 juta tahun lalu. Pada periode Jura, burung berevolusi dari coelurosaurian theropoda, dan hari ini diwakili oleh sekitar 10.000 spesies hidup.




Ukuran



Spinosaurus adalah Theropoda terbesar dengan ukuran 6 meter lebih panjang dan 1 ton lebih berat dari Tyrannosaurus (T-Rex).
Theropoda terbesar saat ini adalah burung unta, dengan tinggi 2,74 m dan berat antara 63,5 dan 145,15 kg. Sedangkan Theropoda terkecil adalah troodontid Anchiornis huxleyi, dengan berat 110 gram dan panjang 34 cm.
Baru baru ini sebuah teori mengusulkan bahwa ukuran tubuh Theropoda terus menyusut selama 50 juta tahun terakhir, dari rata-rata 163 kilogram menjadi 0,8 kilogram, dan akhirnya berkembang menjadi burung modern. Hal ini didasarkan pada bukti bahwa theropoda adalah satu-satunya dinosaurus yang dapat terus menerus lebih kecil, dan bahwa kerangka mereka berubah empat kali lebih cepat dari spesies dinosaurus lainnya.




Postur tubuh



Hampir semua Theropoda diketahui adalah bipedal yaitu dengan lengan depan lebih pendek dari kaki belakang. Beberapa Theropoda berdiri tegak seperti bebek dan lainnya berdiri lebih mendatar seperti angsa.
