    Torcello (bahasa Latin: Torcellum; bahasa Venesia: Torceło) adalah sebuah pulau yang sangat jarang penduduknya di ujung utara Laguna Venesia, Italia timur laut. Tujuan wisata utama di pulau ini adalah Katedral Santa Maria Assunta.


    Sejarah


    Setelah jatuhnya Kekaisaran Romawi Barat, Torcello adalah salah satu pulau laguna pertama yang dihuni oleh pengungsi-pengungsi dari terra ferma yang melarikan diri dari serangan-serangan barbar, terutama setelah Attila menghancurkan kota Altinum dan permukiman-permukiman di sekitarnya pada tahun 452. Walaupun wilayah Veneto secara resmi merupakan bagian dari Exarchatus Ravenna semenjak berakhirnya Perang Goth, wilayah ini masih belum aman akibat serangan-serangan suku-suku Jerman. Selama dua ratus tahun berikutnya, serangan kaum Langobardi dan Frank memicu gelombang pengungsi ke pulau ini. Salah satu orang yang mengungsi adalah Uskup Altino. Pada tahun 638, Torcello menjadi pusat keuskupan tersebut dan rakyat Altinum membawa pusaka Santo Heliodorus yang kini menjadi santo pelindung Torcello.
    Torcello berkembang pesat menjadi pusat politik dan dagang: pada abad ke-10, diperkirakan terdapat sekitar 10.000-30.000 penduduk, walaupun hasil perkiraan arkeologis yang lebih terkini memperkirakan jumlahnya maksimum hanya 3.000 jiwa. Pada masa sebelum abad pertengahan, Torcello merupakan pusat dagang yang lebih kuat daripada Venesia. Berkat rawa-rawa garam di laguna, garam menjadi tulang punggung ekonomi Torcello dan pelabuhannya menjadi pasar ekspor di jalur dagang timur-barat. Laguna di sekitar pulau Torcello secara perlahan menjadi rawa-rawa semenjak abad ke-12 dan mengundang nyamuk-nyamuk yang membawa penyakit malaria, sehingga hari kejayaan Torcello pun berakhir. Navigasi di laguna morta (laguna mati) tidak lagi mungkin dan penduduknya pada akhirnya pindah ke Murano, Burano, atau Venice. Saat ini Torcello hanya dihuni oleh 10 orang, termasuk pastor di gereja.
