    Trap adalah subgenre musik hip hop yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat bagian Selatan pada awal 1990-an. Kata "trap" sendiri merupakan slang asal Atlanta yang mengacu pada tempat transaksi narkoba ilegal. Musik trap menggunakan drum yang disintesis, dengan ciri khas pola hi-hat yang rumit, drum kick yang ditala dengan decay yang lama (aslinya menggunakan mesin drum Roland TR-808), synth yang membentuk atmosfer tertentu, dan tema lirik yang berfokus pada penggunaan obat-obat terlarang dan kejahatan kota. Trap memanfaatkan sangat sedikit instrumen dan lebih berfokus pada suara snare drum dan pecahan not tuplet pada hi-hat. Inilah yang menjadi ciri khas musik trap.
    Pelopor dari genre ini antara lain adalah; produser rekaman Kurtis Mantronik, Mannie Fresh, Shawty Redd, Zaytoven, dan DJ Toomp, serta penyanyi rap Jeezy, Gucci Mane dan T.I. (yang menciptakan istilah "trap" melalui album 2003-nya, Trap Muzik). Namun, suara trap modern dipopulerkan oleh produser Lex Luger, yang turun tangan pada album milik Waka Flocka Flame, Flockaveli pada tahun 2010, dan menjadi salah satu pendiri tim produksi rekaman yang produktif, 808 Mafia.
    Sejak beralih ke popularitas arus utama di tahun 2010-an, musik trap telah menjadi salah satu bentuk musik Amerika yang paling populer, dengan konsisten mendominasi tangga lagu Billboard Hot 100 sepanjang dekade, dengan artis seperti Drake, Cardi B, Migos, Lil Uzi Vert, 24kGoldn, iann dior, Post Malone, XXXTentacion, Young Thug, dan Travis Scott (serta banyak lainnya) mencapai tangga lagu No. 1 dengan lagu-lagu yang termasuk dalam subgenre trap. Hal ini pun telah memengaruhi gaya musik artis-artis pop dan R&B, seperti Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna dan lainnya. Pengaruh musik trap juga dapat didengarkan pada genre reggaeton and K-pop. Pada 2018, musik hip-hop menjadi bentuk musik terpopuler untuk pertama kalinya (menurut Data Nielsen), bertepatan dengan popularitas trap yang terus meningkat. Pada tahun 2019, lagu country-rap yang terinspirasi trap, "Old Town Road" oleh Lil Nas X (menampilkan Billy Ray Cyrus) memecahkan rekor dengan waktu terpanjang (19 minggu) dalam memuncaki No. 1 pada tangga lagu Billboard Hot 100, serta menjadi lagu tercepat untuk mencapai Sertifikasi Diamond.
