    Ulfilas (311– 383), yang dalam Bahasa Gothik memiliki arti "srigala kecil" (Wulfila), adalah seorang misionaris, penerjemah Alkitab, dan uskup Gereja yang mengabarkan Injil kepada kalangan bangsa Goth.


    Kehidupan


    Ulfilas lahir sekitar tahun 311 atau 318. Ia ditahbiskan menjadi seorang uskup pada pada usia 30 tahun oleh Eusebius dari Nicomedia, kemungkinan pada saat ia menjabat di kedutaan Kaisar Konstantinus, sekitar tahun 348. Pada tahun 360-an ia menganut ajaran Arianisme. Ulfilas kemudian bekerja memberitakan Injil di kalangan bangsa Goth, di mana ia berasal. Pada tahun 376, ia diminta oleh Fritigern, pangeran Visigoth, untuk berunding dengan Valens yang adalah seorang Arian agar bangsa Visigoth dapat menetap di wilayah Kekaisaran Romawi. Valens kemudian membantu Fritigern melawan Athanaric, pangeran Ostrogoth. Setelah kemenangan Fritigern atas Athanaric, kaum Goth pimpinan Fritigern kemudian berkonversi menjadi Kristen beraliran Arianisme, mengikuti Valens yang membantu mereka. Pada saat bersamaan, Ulfilas menemukan atau mengembangkan aksara Gothik dan menerjemahkan Alkitab ke dalam bahasa Goth. Ulfilas meninggal pada tahun 388 di Konstantinopel saat ia berusaha untuk bermediasi dengan Theodosius mewakili pandangan Arian.
