    Urushiol adalah campuran beberapa turunan katekol yang unsur utamanya berupa minyak penyebab alergi yang ditemukan di beberapa tanaman keluarga Anacardiaceae, terutama Toxicodendron spp (misalnya ek beracun, poison ivy, poison sumac). Nama urushiol diambil dari nama pohon urushi Jepang (Toxicodendron vernicifluum).


    Sumber


    Kacang mete secara alami mengandung urushiol yang zat yang ditemukan di semua anggota keluarga pohon Anacardiaceae. Meliputi kacang mete, mangga, poison ivy, poison oak, sumac, lada peru, dan badam hijau. Urushiol berada di semua bagian tanaman, termasuk akar, batang, dan daun, dan juga cenderung berada di perbatasan kulit jambu mete dan kacang di dalamnya.


    Dampak


    Sensitivitas tinggi terhadap urushiol dapat menyebabkan reaksi alergi ekstrem ketika kacang mete mentah tertelan. Individu yang alergi terhadap poison ivy berpotensi memiliki reaksi fatal jika mengonsumsi kacang mete mentah. Kandungan urushiol pada kacang mete mentah menjadi alasan kenapa kacang mete tanpa pemrosesan tidak boleh dikonsumsi. Berkontak dengan urushiol biasanya menyebabkan kontak alergi dermatitis. Untuk orang-orang yang sensitif, urushiol dapat menyebabkan radang pada kulit karena alergi pada saat terjadi kontak dengan zat ini, yang dikenal dengan istilah dermatitis karena kontak urushiol atau urushiol-induced contact dermatitis.


    Kandungan


    Urushiol merupakan substitusi 1-(alkil)- atau 1-(alkenil)-2,3-dihidroksibenzena, dengan gugus alkil/alkenilnya adalah C15–C17 dengan satu hingga tiga ikatan rangkap. Minyak ini tersusun dari campuran katekol (1,2-dihidroksibenzena) dan resorsinol (1,3-dihidroksibenzena).


    Penanganan


    Penanganan kontak urushiol dapat berbeda tergantung dari tingkat keparahan dan infeksi sekunder. Pencucian urushiol sebelum terikat dengan lipid membran akan membantu mencegah reaksi iritasi yang lebih parah. Kebanyakan urushiol dapat dihilangkan dengan mencuci area kontak dalam 15 menit. Selain itu, beberapa kasus terjadi karena adanya transfer urushiol dari baju atau alat yang terkena ke kulit. Oleh karena itu, mencuci setiap baju atau alat yang sebelumnya mengenai urushiol dengan alkohol atau produk komersial pembersih akan efektif untuk menghilangkannya.
