Viroid adalah patogen tumbuhan yang tersusun dari potongan pendek (beberapa ratus basa nukleotida) RNA yang komplementer, sirkuler, dan beruntai tunggal. Viroid berbeda dengan virus; struktur penyusun viroid tidak memliki kapsid. Viroid hanya mampu bereproduksi di dalam sel hidup sebagai partikel RNA. Sebagai pembanding ukuran, viroid mampu menginfeksi pada susunan yang mempunyai 2 kilobasa. Ukuran viroid sangat kecil; jika dibandingkan dengan ukuran atom sekitar atau di bawah 10.000 atom. Perbandingan ukuran viroid dengan virus lainya 80 kali lebih kecil daripada virus.
Viroid pertama kali ditemukan oleh Theodor Otto Diener, seorang ahli penyakit tanaman yang bekerja di Pusat Penelitian Pertanian di Maryland pada tahun 1971. Diener menemukan partikel RNA infektif yang lebih kecil daripada virus dan dapat menyebabkan penyakit pada tumbuhan. Ia menamakannya viroid. Viroid menginfeksi tanaman kentang, menyebabkan umbi kentang menggelendong (spindle tuber disease).
Viroid tidak mengkode protein, tetapi mampu bereplikasi di dalam sel inang dengan menggunakan enzim seluler. Molekul RNA viroid akan mengganggu metabolisme sel dan mengacaukan sistem pengendali pertumbuhan sehingga menghambat pertumbuhan tanaman. Meskipun viroid ditemukan pada tahun 1971, ternyata pada tahun 1927 sekitar 10 juta tanaman kelapa mati karena terinfeksi viroid di Filipina.
