Vukovar (pelafalan dalam bahasa Serbo-Croatian: [ʋûkoʋaːr]) adalah sebuah kota yang terletak di timur Kroasia. Di kota ini terdapat pelabuhan sungai terbesar Kroasia, terletak di pertemuan Sungai Vuka dan Donau. Vukovar merupakan ibu kota Kabupaten Vukovar-Syrmia. Kota ini dihuni oleh 26.468 jiwa pada tahun 2011.




Nama


Nama Vukovar berarti 'kota di tepi Sungai Vuka' (Vuko dari nama Sungai Vuka, dan vár dari bahasa Hungaria yang bermakna 'benteng'). Sungai itu disebut "Ulca" pada zaman kuno, mungkin berakar dari bahasa Iliria. Cerita rakyat mengaitkan nama Vuka dengan kata "vuk", yang berarti "serigala". Dalam bahasa Jerman, kota ini dikenal sebagai Wukowar dan dalam bahasa Hungaria sebagai Vukovár atau Valkóvár. Pada akhir abad ke-17, nama kuno Vukovo digantikan oleh Vukovár yang berasal dari bahasa Hungaria.




Geografi


Vukovar terletak di bagian timur Republik Kroasia dan merupakan pusat dari Kabupaten Vukovar-Syrmia. Lokasinya berada di perbatasan provinsi historis Slavonia Timur dan Syrmia Barat.
Kota ini dilewati jalur transportasi yang penting. Sejak zaman dahulu, rute transportasi aktif beroperasi dari barat laut ke tenggara menyusuri Donau melalui wilayah Vukovar.
Setelah kapal uap diperkenalkan pada pertengahan abad ke-19, dan dengan kedatangan kapal wisata pada zaman modern, Vukovar terhubung dengan Budapest dan Wina di hulu dan hilir sungai di Rumania. Pelabuhan Vukovar merupakan pintu utama kegiatan impor dan ekspor. Sungai Donau menjadi penghubung masyarakat Vukovar dengan Eropa dan dunia.
Vukovar terletak 20 km (12 mil) timur laut Vinkovci dan 36 km (22 mil) tenggara Osijek, di ketinggian 108 mdpl (354 kaki). Vukovar terletak di jalan utama D2 Osijek — Vukovar — Ilok dan di jalur kereta Vinkovci — Vukovar (jalur D55).
