William Kamkwamba (lahir 5 Agustus 1987, di Kasungu, Malawi), adalah seorang penemu, insinyur, dan penulis asal Malawi. Dia menjadi terkenal di negaranya pada tahun 2001 ketika dia membangun sebuah turbin angin untuk menyalakan beberapa peralatan listrik di rumah keluarganya di Wimbe, 23 km (14 mil) sebelah timur Kasungu, dengan menggunakan pohon karet, suku cadang sepeda, dan bahan-bahan yang dikumpulkan dari tempat rongsokan lokal. Sejak saat itu, ia telah membangun pompa air bertenaga surya yang memasok air minum pertama di desanya dan dua turbin angin lainnya, dengan tinggi 12 meter (39 kaki), dan telah membangun dua turbin angin lainnya, termasuk satu turbin angin di Lilongwe, ibukota Malawi.
Kehidupan dan karier
Kamkwamba lahir di keluarga yang relatif miskin dan mengandalkan pertanian untuk bertahan hidup. William senang bermain dengan teman-temannya menggunakan bahan daur ulang.Bencana kelaparan yang melumpuhkan memaksa Kamkwamba putus sekolah, dan dia tidak dapat kembali ke sekolah karena keluarganya tidak mampu membayar uang sekolah. Dalam upaya putus asa untuk mempertahankan pendidikannya, Kamkwamba mulai sering mengunjungi perpustakaan sekolah setempat; di sanalah ia menemukan kecintaannya pada elektronik. Sebelumnya, ia pernah mendirikan usaha kecil-kecilan untuk memperbaiki radio-radio di desanya, namun pekerjaan ini tidak menghasilkan banyak uang.
Kamkwamba, setelah membaca buku berjudul Using Energy,dia memutuskan untuk membuat turbin angin darurat. Dia bereksperimen dengan model kecil menggunakan dinamo murah dan akhirnya membuat turbin angin yang berfungsi dan memberi daya pada beberapa peralatan listrik di rumah keluarganya. Para petani dan jurnalis setempat menyelidiki alat pemintal tersebut dan ketenaran Kamkwamba dalam berita internasional pun meroket. Sebuah blog tentang pencapaiannya ditulis di Hacktivate dan Kamkwamba ikut serta dalam acara pertama yang merayakan kecerdasannya yang disebut Maker Faire Africa di Ghana pada bulan Agustus 2009.
