    Zhong Kui (鍾馗) adalah dewa Mitologi Tiongkok pembasmi setan dan roh jahat. Menurut legenda ia tinggal di Pegunungan Zhongnan di awal Dinasti Tang. Zhong Kui memiliki rupa yang tidak rupawan. Pada awal pemerintahan Kaisar Xuanzong dari Tang, Zhong Kui mengikuti ujian negara. Pejabat bernama Lu Qi menilai Zhong Kui berdasarkan rupanya dan menjelekkan dirinya di depan kaisar. Padahal semua esai yang ia tulis memiliki kualitas tinggi sehingga dipuji oleh pemimpin dari juri istana. Karena kecewa ia akhirnya bunuh diri dengan cara membenturkan diri ke dinding istana.
    Setelah kematiannya, ia dinobatkan sebagai pembasmi setan dan roh jahat oleh Kaisar Dezong. Hal ini dikarenakan rupanya yang membuat roh jahat tidak berani mendekat dan pujian kaisar atas kemurnian hatinya yang tidak membalas Lu Qi. Gambar Zhong Kui banyak dipasang di depan pintu rumah-rumah etnis Tionghoa untuk mengusir roh jahat.
