Basic Explanation of the Relationship with Coral and Zooxanthellae

Jun 26, 2024 · Corals can predate, but they also get help from a dinoflagellate called Zooxanthellae. As mentioned, Zooxanthellae is a type of dinoflagellate which is really just algae. They are single-celled, and roughly about 5 to 2,000 micrometers in size. Corals have evolved to house zooxanthellae in their tissue. Zooxanthellae performs photosynthesis.

Sep 14, 2020 · Tridacna farmers also feed new young clams by pulverize and adult clam and mixed it in the water of baby clam tanks. Baby clams will take these Zooxanthellae internally and establish their own Zooxanthellae population. This is a very straight forward procedure and very easy to perform as documented below. 1.

Lets Talk About Zooxanthellae | Reef2Reef

Mar 11, 2011 · Zooxanthellae (zoo-ah-zan-the-lae) are microscopic single-celled yellow-brown algae (Symbiodinium spp.) that are found living endosymbiotically within the tissues of many marine invertebrate animals, such as cnidarians, flatworms, giant clams, jellyfish, nudibranches, sea anemones, and sponges. These endosymbiotic algae have a mutualistic ...

Zooxanthellae Transplant for Bleached Anemones | Reef2Reef

Sep 15, 2020 · Zooxanthellae are the symbiotic microalgae that live in the tissue of numerous corals and clams. They consume waste produced by their host, coral/clam, and in return produce carbon in the form of a sugar that feeds the host. It has been documented that there is an exchange of zooxanthellae between corals/clams and their environment.

How to control zooxanthellae in the reef aquarium

Oct 6, 2014 · Zooxanthellae enter the host animal through the water column. Corals can adjust the algae population on a daily basis by releasing or by taking up algae as needed. Elevated nitrate can excessively spur the growth of zooxanthellae, which in turn can actually decrease the growth rate of the host coral.

Anemone Expelling Zooxanthellae or Waste? | Reef2Reef

Extracting zooxanthellae from pulsing Xenia, anyone tried it?

Dec 23, 2022 · The mutualistic symbiosis between corals and zooxanthellae is a well-known fact amongst aquarists. To improve our understanding of zooxanthellae biology, scientists isolate these symbionts from the coral host under a variety of environmental conditions. This article will provide an overview of...

corals occasionally expel zooxanthellae | Reef2Reef

Aug 4, 2017 · Is it normal for corals to expel zooxanthellae occasionally? The reason I'm asking is because sometimes my coral will expel their zooxanthellae like once every two weeks or a month. The other finding is my coral will turn a little pale compares when it's first introduced from the LFS. Hope someone can give me some adive. Thank you!

The Sea Slug Forum - What are Zooxanthellae?

Oct 13, 2000 · Zooxanthellae are best known for their role in the life of reef-forming corals. In tropical waters almost all coral animals contain a colony of zooxanthellae. Without these symbiotic plants, the coral animals would be unable to obtain enough nutrients to build their calcium carbonate skeletons, which accumulate to form the vast coral reefs of ...
