American Football League atau disingkat (AFL) adalah liga sepak bola Amerika profesional utama yang beroperasi dari tahun 1960 sampai tahun 1969, ketika bergabung dengan National Football League (NFL).




Sejarah


AFL dibentuk pada tahun 1959 oleh sejumlah pemilik tim yang telah menolak ekspansi waralaba NFL atau memiliki saham waralaba kecil NFL. Anggota asli AFL terdiri dari anggota divisi Timur yaitu New York Titans, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills dan Oilers Houston bersama dengan divisi Barat Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, dan Dallas Texans.
Pada tahun-tahun pertama AFL terlihat persaingan merata dan tingkat kehadiran yang rendah. Liga ini ditopang oleh kontrak televisi ABC. Tahun-tahun berikutnya terjadi persaingan sengit dengan NFL sehingga membuat pemain gaji meroket di kedua liga, terutama setelah serangkaian rebutan pemain. Kemudian setelah melalui serangkaian perundingan, kedua liga sepakat untuk merger pada tahun 1966. Dalam salah satu rancangan perjanjian merger disebutkan akan diadakan pertandingan kejuaraan yang dimainkan antara dua juara liga, yang akhirnya akan menjadi Super Bowl.
Setelah bergabung, AFL dan NFL dioperasikan sebagai liga terpisah sampai 1970, dengan musim reguler terpisah dan jadwal playoff kecuali untuk pertandingan kejuaraan. Selama masa transisi in AFL menambahkan Miami Dolphins dan Cincinnati Bengals. Setelah kerugian dialami oleh Kansas City dan Oakland dalam dua AFL-NFL Championship Games Green Bay Packers, New York Jets dan Kansas City Chiefs memenangkan Super Bowl III dan IV, menyebabkan klaim liga untuk menjadi sama dengan NFL.
Pada tahun 1970, AFL telah dilebur ke dalam NFL, dan sepuluh waralaba AFL bersama dengan Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, dan Pittsburgh Steelers menbentuk American Football Conference.




Daftar tim



Sekarang, dua dari delapan divisi yang ada di NFL adalah mantan tim-tim AFL yang terdiri dari, AFC Barat (Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, dan Raiders) serta AFC Timur (Bills, Dolphins, Jets, dan Patriots). Selain itu, Bengals sekarang bermain di AFC Utara dan kemudian Tennessee Titans (sebelumnya Oilers) bermain di AFC South.
