Also, AAE files can be deleted without erasing your pictures but any edits made to them will be removed. The AAE file is referenced by the Photos app when opening the JPG file in which it is associated. Sep 29, 2014 · As has already been posted in this thread, an .aae file contains edits to the associated image that you have made on the phone, using either the image editing capabilities or by enabling filters. .aae files do not hold the image, only the edit instructions. The post immediately above yours, posted 6 months ago, explains it.
Apr 17, 2018 · The iOS 8 and above leave the original photograph alone and saves your edit instructions in a separate file, namely the AAE file (also called the AAE sidecar file). The location of the AAE file is in the same folder as the original photo and follows the same naming format, but instead of .JPG at the end, it will have the .AAE file extension.

If you import pictures from an iOS device to Windows, only the JPEG images will get transferred and not the AAE files, which will cause to lose your edits. Also, AAE files can be deleted without erasing the pictures but any edits made will be undone.

Jul 23, 2015 · If you've edited a photo (e.g. added filters, cropped, etc), then the AAE file for that photo would contain the adjustments, while the JPG would be the original, unedited photo. At this point, there aren't any apps that appear to actually support importing these files. If an image has not been edited there will not be an AAE file for it.
Dec 7, 2015 · The .AAE files are not videos but sidecar files that describe the edits of a photo or video. An .AAE file is useless without the actual media file. There must be a video file with the same name, but a different filename extension that contains the actual video.
