Abrakadabra adalah sebuah mantra yang digunakan sebagai kata ajaib dalam trik sulap, dan menurut sejarah, kata ini diyakini memiliki kekuatan penyembuhan ketika tertulis di sebuah jimat. Kata ini sering dikaitkan dengan praktik ritual, talisman dan pentakel yang menunjukkan simbol dengan ekspresi baik berupa bunyi-bunyian maupun tulisan. Pada abad pertengahan, kata ini digunakan sebagai formula ajaib.




Etimologi



Abrakadabra tidak diketahui asal mulanya, dan kemunculan pertama kata ini adalah pada abad kedua dalam karya Serenus Sammonicus, menurut Oxford English Dictionary. Beberapa etimologi rakyat yang terkait dengan kata ini antara lain: dari ungkapan-ungkapan dalam bahasa Ibrani yang berarti "Saya buat seperti yang katakan". Ungkapan lain dalam bahasa Ibrani, yakni abreq ad hâbra yang mengandung arti "lemparkan petir Anda bahkan sampai kematian". Ungkapan lain dari bahasa Aram "Saya membuat seperti saya katakan", untuk etimologi rakyat yang menunjuk ke kata-kata yang mirip dalam bahasa Latin dan Yunani seperti abraxas. Menurut OED Online, "tidak ada dokumentasi yang ditemukan untuk mendukung salah satu dari berbagai dugaan tersebut." Kata abraxas dari Gnostik memiliki makna nama salah satu dewa matahari, yakni Mithras.
