Cernunnos menurut kepercayaan mitologi keltik merujuk pada dewa bertanduk yang menguasai tempat-tempat liar. Ia juga disebutkan sebagai dewa tumbuh-tumbuhan. jejak-jejak pemujaan Corninnus banyak ditemukan dibagian Kepulauan Inggris, Irlandia, dan wilayah Eropa Barat. Sering digambarkan sebagai dewa yang mempunyai janggut dan rambut acak-acakan serta tanduk rusa jantan dibagian kepalanya. Sering juga dikaitkan dengan hewan jantan, penguasa hutan, pelindung hutan, penguasa perburuan, dewa kematian, dan penjaga dunia bawah. Oleh kepercayaan Yunani menyebutnya dengan dewa nafsu dan kesuburan. Cernunnos juga dijuluki dengan sebutan Lord of the wild things atau penguasa hal-hal liar. Pada abad pertengahan Cernunnos digunakan sebagai simbol antikristus oleh gereja kristen.
Sejarah
Istilah atau nama cernunnos telah diketahui melalui ukiran batu peninggalan Masa Gallo-Romawi yang ditemukan di Paris. Pada batu hasil galian tersebut terdapat ukiran seorang dewa yang memiliki dua tanduk dan pada sisi batunya terdapat lukisan "cernunnos". Saat ini batu/ prasasti tersebut dijaga dan dipajang dikoleksi Museum Cluny, Paris. Untuk penggambaran Cernunnos sendiri salah satu preferensinya merujuk pada ukiran batu di Lembah Val Camonica, Italia Utara. penelitian yang dilakukan pada tahun 1991 oleh seorang dosen sekaligus pendeta, Morning Glory Zell, dan juga merupakan seorang pemimpin komintas neopagan yang meyakini adanya ukiran Cernunnos pada relief batu tersebut. Sosok Cernunnos digambarkan dengan posisi berdiri tegak mengenakan pakaian panjang dan torc atau torsi dilehernya serta membawa torc dan ditemani seekor ular bertanduk ditangan yang satunya. Diperkirakan ukiran batu tersebut dibuat sekitar tahun 400 SM.Wujud Cernunnos juga pernah digambarkan sebagai Herne si pemburu dalam buku God of the Witches oleh seorang penutur sejarah, antropolog, dan folklorist, Margaret Allice Murray pada tahun 1931.
Namun penggambaran secara identik oleh para penelitian yang mewakili wujud Cernunnos adalah dari peninggalan sejarah yang ditemukan di rawa gambut Denmark, di dekat desa Gundestrup di Jutland Utara pada tahun 1891. sebuah piring tembaga berlapis perak berbentuk kuali atau cawan yang diketahui telah ada sejak Masa abad kesatu sebelum masehi. Pada bagian dalam piring tersebut terdapat ukiran berupa adegan perang yang melibatkan para dewa. Terrdapat satu figur dengan posisi sedang duduk bersila yang mengenakan dua tanduk rusa sedang mengacungkan ular berkepala kambing dan memegang torc di tangan yang lain, di sekelilingnya terdapat beberapa hewan seperti rusa jantan, singa, anjing, rusa betina, dan kambing Ibex. Figur tersebut diyakini sebagai Cernunnos.
Hampir sama dengan penemuan cawan perak di Desa Gundestrup, sebuah mangkuk perak yang ditemukan di Kota Lyons, Perancis juga memiliki ukiran yang merefleksikan perwujudan Cernunnos. Pada ukiran tersebut terdapat sosok yang diyakini sebagai Cernunnos meskipun tanpa kepala, ia sedang mengenakan torc dilehernya dan memegang satu torc pada salah satu tangannya. Disebelah kanannya terdapat seekor rusa jantan dan seekor anjing disebelah kirinya, serta seekor ular yang sedang melilitkan tubuhnya pada batang pohon.
Penemuan terakhir yaitu pada tahun 2018 oleh para arkeolog di Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire, Inggris. Penemuan berupa patung atau ornament kecil berbentuk humanoid (setengah manusia) dengan kedua tangannya yang sedang memegang cincin leher/ torc. Patung tembaga campuran berukuran lima sentimeter yang wajahnya telah terkikis tersebut menurut hipotesis para arkeolog merupakan penggambaran dari Cernunnos dan diyakini berasal dari masa abad kedua sebelum masehi.
