Dennis Edward Spies (born March 5, 1968) is an American priest of the Catholic Church who serves as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Joliet.
Biography
= Early life
=Most Rev. Dennis E. Spies was born to Rose Mary and the Late Vincent Spies in 1968. He attended Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Ashkum, Illinois. He attended Ashkum Elementary School and Clifton Central High School. In 1990, Spies earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture business economics from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
= Priesthood
=In 1997, Spies entered into priestly formation at Mundelien Seminary (University of Saint Mary of the Lake). On June 1, 2002, Spies was ordained to the priesthood, by Most Rev. Joseph L. Imesch, Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet at the Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet, Illinois. He first served as associate pastor at St. Walter's Parish in Roselle from 2002 to 2005. He then served as associate pastor at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Plainfield, from 2005 to 2008. Then he served as pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Gibson City, St George in Melvin, and Immaculate Conception in Roberts, from 2008 to 2011. He then served as pastor at St. Liborius in Steger, Mother Teresa Catholic Academy in Crete, and St. Mary Parish in Park Forest, from 2013 to 2016.
In 2010, Spies received a Sacred Theology Degree and License (STL) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. From 2016 to 2024, he served as Director of Pre-Theology and Internship on the formation faculty at Mundelien Seminary. On July 1, 2024, he was appointed Vicar for Clergy of the Diocese of Joliet by Most Rev. Ronald A. Hicks, bishop of Joliet.
Throughout his priesthood her served in many other ministries. Including the Diocese of Joliet's Presbyteral Council (from 2006 to 2011), Dean of Will County (of the Deanery of parishes and priests) (from 2016 to 2023), Insititute of Priestly Formation (2016–2023), Cursillo retreats and spiritual leader (2003–2024), and Be Healed retreat leader (2020–2024).
= Episcopal career
=Pope Francis appointed Spies auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Joliet on September 27, 2024. On November 6, 2024, Spies was consecrated as a bishop at the Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet, Illinois.
