Galata adalah sebuah kawasan yang berseberangan dengan Konstantinopel (sekarang Istanbul, Turki), yang terletak di pesisir utara Tanduk Emas, sebuah inlet yang memisahkan kawasan tersebut dari semenanjung bersejarah Konstantinopel lama. Tanduk Emas dilintasi oleh beberapa jembatan, yang paling terkenal adalah Jembatan Galata. Citadel Galata abad pertengahan merupakan sebuah koloni Republik Genoa antara 1273 dan 1453. Menara Galata yang terkenal dibangun oleh bangsa Genoa adalah 1348 di titik paling utara dan tertinggi dari citadel tersebut. Pada saat ini, Galata merupakan sebuah perempatan di borough Beyoğlu, Istanbul, dan dikenal sebagai Karaköy.




Sejarah


Galatasaray S.K., salah satu klub sepak bola paling terkenal di Turki, mengambil namanya dari perempatan ini dan didirikan pada 1905 di dekat Lapangan Galatasaray di Beyoğlu (Pera), dimana Sekolah Tinggi Galatasaray, yang awalnya dikenal sebagai Mekteb-i Sultani, juga berdiri. Galatasaray secara literal artinya Istana Galata.
